It’s not an easy feat for a skill player to win the award as all his stats feed into the quarterback throwing it to him. Should Smith want to pull away from Jalen Hurts, then he will have to find success after the catch for long gains down the field.

That was the recipe for his success in his time at Alabama as Devonta Smith was a YAC monster. This shifts the attention from the total passing yards to Smith’s total receiving yards, making his production look more crucial to the Eagles potential success.

Not only will yards after the catch be vital, but it is crucial to add a few touchdowns to his stat line as well. This can come from a long gain across the middle or taking advantage of red zone throwing situations.

How Devonta Smith cannot win the award

If Smith were to repeat the NFC Conference Championship and go a long while without any production, then he can kiss his chances for the award goodbye. A skill player has to make plays throughout the course of the game, not just making a single play or two.

Red zone looks will also be tough to come by as the Eagles may opt in for a rush heavy approach as they near the endzone. This was made apparent against the 49ers, attacking the outside for multiple rushing scores.

Verdict

Even though the number is juicy for a receiver who should get open looks across the middle with potential huge YAC opportunities, this is a pass for me as the Eagles dual threat ability will strip away crucial chances in the red zone. Should the Eagles continue to opt into running the ball near the end zone, then he has little to no hope of stealing the MVP award as his chances are reliant on touchdowns.
