The first daily fantasy operator has been approved in the Bayou State. DraftKings has won the race to become the first approved DFS operator in Louisiana. The decision became public Wednesday. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board is finally authorizing DraftKings for launch, and that will go into effect on Thursday.
Louisiana was one of the few states in which DraftKings daily fantasy was not operational. There have been major delays on the way to getting approved; however, DFS seems to finally be coming to Louisiana. DraftKings can launch as soon as the approval is official, which could be as early as tonight, Thursday, July 16th.
Timing of Approval
Louisiana has been looking forward to daily fantasy sports for a long while. Daily fantasy sports became legal well over a year ago, but delays in the licensing and regulation process have made the wait extreme. Due to this, DraftKings is going to get a major advantage being the first company to launch daily fantasy sports. The excitement for daily fantasy is there, and players in Louisiana have been waiting for ages to play.
The only downside is the somewhat limited sporting events going on at the moment. The two biggest will be daily fantasy competitions for MLB as well as the NBA Finals. However, even with a lack of events, many suspect DraftKings is about to receive a large influx of new players.
Sports Betting
While daily fantasy sports is not nearly as profitable as sports betting, this approval for DraftKings is absolutely key for the company. Online sports betting is coming to Louisiana. Now that DraftKings can launch daily fantasy sports, the company can build a dedicated user base and name recognition that will be key when looking to capture large chunks of the sports betting market.
DraftKings has seen great results transitioning daily fantasy sports players to its sportsbook in other states. This could be seen as a large reason as to why DraftKings Sportsbook is one of the largest in the United States.
DraftKings will need to partner with one of the retail casinos that receive an online sports betting license in order to launch in Louisiana. Many hope that sports betting can go live in the Fall. However, after seeing how long daily fantasy sports took to get up and running, some are pessimistic about the government’s and the Louisiana Gaming Control Board’s ability to get things done in a timely manner.
