Partnership Between the Pistons and FanDuel/DraftKings
Michigan sports betting has been legalized for some time now, with the first bets being placed in-person in March of this year. However, the regulatory bodies in the state have taken their sweet time getting online betting regulations and licenses out. However, finally, at the end of the year, it seems that online betting is in sight for the Wolverine State.
With both FanDuel and DraftKings announcing pre-registration recently, it only makes sense to also now officially unveil the partnership that the two will have with the historic NBA franchise, the Detroit Pistons. The two will be the official sports betting partners of the Detroit Pistons, which will allow them to use their trademarked logos, assets, and more. This will also open up opportunities for FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook to market at Pistons’ games, both online and at the stadium.
The Pistons also announced that it is making FanDuel’s brick and mortar partner, MotorCity Casino Hotel, its official partner. The hotel has already announced that it will be providing special benefits for Pistons games like viewing parties, special promotions, and even giveaways.
Outlook
I would argue that this was a fantastic move by the Pistons. They have basically signed a deal with the two sportsbooks who should be vying for the number 1 spot in the state for years to come. The two have proven that they will be aggressive in states and make sure that they can capture as much of the market as possible. The Pistons obviously want to be associated with that and reel in the cash from marketing deals and partnerships with the two biggest names in online sports betting.
Both FanDuel and DraftKings offer not only sports betting but also daily fantasy sports, which means that consumers can get all their sports gaming and gambling from one site. Not to mention that both will also be offering an online casino. Giving them each the trifecta of daily fantasy sports, sports gambling, and casino for their online platforms.
I am sure that this will not be the end to partnerships in Michigan, as BetMGM has already become the official betting partner of the Detroit Lions. The next major player will be the Red Wings, as Detroit has always been deemed somewhat of an American hockey hub. The Detroit Tigers will also be a professional team to keep an eye out for. Depending on who secures these deals, it could shift the balance of the market in such a lucrative state for these sportsbooks.
One must remember that sports betting is relatively new for most of America, so getting exposure through the actual teams themselves gives these platforms legitimacy that no marketing campaign really can. People are going to feel much safer about betting with an official sponsor of a major sporting team than they will with some random sportsbook that popped up as an ad on YouTube. This is why these partnerships are so important for these bookmakers.
Sports betting is coming, and news about the launch of online betting and partnerships will continue to trickle in from the Wolverine State.
