Illinois vs Nebraska
In a Big Ten matchup, the Illinois Fighting Illini (1-3) will take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-2) in a battle of one-win teams. The Illini are coming off of their first when of the season when they narrowly escaped Rutgers 23-20. Nebraska also got their first win of the season when they took down Penn State 30-23.
Illinois has one of the lowest-scoring offenses in the country (116th). However, they did play Wisconsin in Week 1 and were held to just seven points, which is understandable. They put up a respectable 24 points against Purdue. Illinois fell behind Minnesota which allowed the Golden Gophers to control the clock and hold the Illini to just 14 points.
Nebraska’s offense is barely any better as they rank 111th in the country. However, they played two good defenses in Ohio State and Northwestern. Last week against Penn State, they matched their total from the first two games combined with 30 points.
Defensively, the edge is in favor of Nebraska, who ranks 81st compared to 95th for Illinois, despite playing tougher opponents. Nebraska’s defense made some big stops at the end of the Penn State game as well.
Luke McCaffrey took over the starting job at quarterback for Nebraska. Much like his brother Christian, Luke is an explosive playmaker who is tough to take down in the open field. The Nebraska offense looked more energized and difficult to slow down last week with him at quarterback.
The Illini are going to have trouble slowing down McCaffrey and this new look Nebraska offense. Illinois has trouble scoring, against even weak defenses. Nebraska’s defense isn’t the strongest but they are a solid unit and should have no trouble stopping Illinois. Roll with the Cornhuskers to get at least a two-touchdown victory on Saturday.
Pick: Nebraska-14
