Israel Adesanya vs Paulo Henrique Costa
UFC 253 is slated for this Saturday, September 26th. A stacked card will be capped off by a main event title bout between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa for the UFC Middleweight Championship. Adesanya (19-0) is coming off of a title defense win against Yoel Romero back in March at UFC 248. Costa (13-0) is also coming off of a win against Romero in his last bout, which took place back in August of 2019.
Adesanya is considered one of the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artists in the world. The Nigerian/New Zealand fighter has won by knockout in 15 of his 19 fights with the other four coming via decision. However, he started his career with 12 straight knockouts and has only won via knockout in two of his last seven fights. Four came via unanimous decision and one via split.
Costa is a proven knockout artist as well. He was won 11 of his 13 fights via knockout with one coming via submission and his most recent fight ending in a unanimous decision. Aside from his decision victory over Romero, Costa has two knockout wins over notable fighters in Uriah Hall and Johny Hendricks.
When you compare the two fighters, you will notice that Adesanya has an eight-inch reach advantage over Costa. Adesanya is also two inches taller and two years older than Costa. It is clear that both fighters like to stand and fight but when it comes to the ground game, the advantage is in favor of the BJJ black belt Costa (Adesanya is a blue belt).
The longer this fight stays standing, the more it favors Adesanya. However, Costa can certainly hold his own standing and is capable of winning a stand-up fight. The ground game advantage is in Costa’s favor and he will likely be looking to take this fight to the ground.
While Adesdanya is the champion, there are some that think Adesanya isn’t as good as his record and title would suggest. Costa appears to be the more rounded MMA fighter and considering he has had 13 months off, he should come into this fight looking to control it from the start. The odds will show you that this is expected to be a close fight that could certainly go either way. In what might not be a huge surprise to some, look for Costa to wear Adesanya down and win this fight via decision.
Pick: Costa via decision
