Top Pitchers
Mike Soroka ($9,000) vs Phillies– Soroka continues to be excellent for the Braves and in his last 14 starts he has only allowed more than 3 ERs once. He isn’t a big strikeout guy so he won’t give you that but he has been limiting the hits thus he has not allowed many runs. He has shown the ability to get deep into games vs any opponent so him going up against the Phillies tonight doesn’t scare me off of him. Soroka is one of the best young arms and in this small nighttime July 4th slate I will be backing him.
Dinelson Lamet ($7,100) vs Dodgers– Lamet is making his first start in the big leagues in about 1.5 years after having Tommy John surgery last April. Lamet wasn’t spectacular in his rookie season but he almost hits triple digits with his fastball and he owned a 28.7% strikeout percentage in 21 starts in 2017. He still has his velocity despite the surgery and is expected to be let loose at around 85 pitches per start as long as he feels well. This is a scary situation with his matchup against the Dodgers but with some unfamiliarity I think we can get a solid 5 innings out of Lamet tonight in LA.
Top Hitters
Rafael Devers ($5,300) vs Blue Jays– Devers has been excellent with the bat as of late with 16 hits in his last 7 games with 10 R 2 HR and 10 RBIs in that span. He is hitting almost .330 this season and has proven to be one of the best run producers in the middle of a very good Red Sox batting order. He will be up against Marcus Stroman tonight who he is 1/5 with a BB in his career against so he should know what’s coming. Despite the price, the recent form of Devers is my reasoning for this pick.
Cavan Biggio ($4,700) vs Red Sox– Cavan Biggio has acclimated pretty well so far to big league pitching and he is 5 for his last 12 coming into this matchup. He doesn’t have a lot of power but he has shown the ability to swipe a bag or two and get on base at a very high clip. In this small slate you got to take some risk and in this spot vs a struggling Rick Porcello I think Biggio can warrant his pretty high price tag.
Franmil Reyes ($3,700) vs Dodgers– After struggling a bit Padres slugger Franmil Reyes is hitting the ball very well. He comes into tonight’s contest with at least a hit in 7 of his last 8 games with 5 HRs in that span. Reyes may have 25+ bombs but he is an underrated hitter in general with the ability to take it the other way and not swing for the fences every time like a lot of these guys. He is a streaky hitter so I think he might be able to get to Ryu tonight who hasn’t allowed less than 6 hits in any of his last 4 starts.
Jonathan Lucroy ($3,000) vs Rangers– Lucroy hasn’t been getting the start every night but he did have 3 RBIs in his last start and he has seen tonight’s Rangers starter, Lance Lynn, very well. In 40 career plate appearances vs Lynn, Lucroy is hitting .303 with 7 BB and 2 2Bs. At only $3,000 I think Lucroy offers some pretty good value, if he is in the lineup, in an overall weak slate for catchers tonight.
