Las Vegas Raiders vs New England Patriots

new england patriotsThe Las Vegas Raiders (2-0) take on the New England Patriots (1-1) this Sunday at 1 PM EST. The Raiders are coming off of a Monday Night Football win against the New Orleans Saints 34-24. The New England Patriots are coming off of a 35-30 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.

Las Vegas won a surprising upset on Monday night with a heavy rush attack and a strong performance from quarterback Derek Carr. Las Vegas controlled the game with their long scoring drives which helped them possess the ball for more than 36 minutes compared to less than 24 for New Orleans.

New England had an opportunity to win the game in the final seconds against Seattle on Sunday but bad play-calling on the final play of the game caused them to fall short. New England played well on offense, amassing 464 total yards (397 passing) and committed just two penalties throughout the whole game. A solid New England defense had a rough night (despite scoring a touchdown) thanks to a handful of deep passes by Russell Wilson.

Las Vegas managed to control the clock against a weak New Orleans defense. Doing so will be a more difficult task against a very good New England defense. Seattle managed to burn New England deep a number of times, something that Derek Carr had trouble doing against the Saints’ defense. Carr missed a number of deep open receivers against the Saints on Monday night.

New Orleans was also without top receiving threat in Michael Thomas. The Saints’ offense and Drew Brees clearly struggled without Thomas on the field. New England also presents another threat in Cam Newton’s legs that Las Vegas didn’t have to deal with when playing Brees and the Saints.

New England will do better to stop the run than New Orleans did. Also, they will have better execution slowing down Darren Waller, who is the Raiders’ biggest receiving threat. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is still learning how to call plays with a mobile quarterback like Newton compared to the years he spent with Tom Brady under center. New England should only improve on offense as the season progresses and they did do well in Week 2.

Look for a better New England defense to handle Las Vegas much better than New Orleans did. Also, the Patriots’ offense will provide a different look for the Las Vegas defense, causing issues for them. New England should get a comfortable win and cover in the process against a Raiders’ team that will be over-hyped heading into Week 3.

Pick: New England -5.5
