Best NFL Picks Week 1
Washington Redskins vs Philadelphia Eagles (-9.5)
Sunday 1:00 PM
The Washington Redskins appear to be in for a long season. Coach Jay Gruden appears to be fighting for his job and the Redskins roster looks like one of the weakest in the league. The Redskins offensive line alone is so overly matched that whoever is at quarterback for the Redskins (Case Keenum getting the start) will have a difficult time. The Trent Williams holdout doesn’t help the o-line situation either. The Eagles have a solid defense from top-to-bottom and should have one of the best overall units by the end of the season.
Carson Wentz and the Eagles offense may be just as much of a mismatch for the Redskins defense as the Eagles defense is for the Redskins offense. Although, the Redskins defense is supposed to be the focal point of this team, so perhaps that won’t be the case. Losing Reuben Foster back in May was a big blow for the Redskins defense. The Eagles offensive line is a very solid core and should be able to give Wentz and the plethora of Eagles running backs plenty of opportunity to have a big game. In the NFL, a 9.5 spread is pretty high but the Eagles should be able to cover this high spread in what is expected to be one of the biggest mismatches of Week 1.
Atlanta Falcons (+4) vs Minnesota Vikings (Over 48)
Sunday 1:00 PM
Now that Andrew Luck is retired, the Atlanta Falcons vs Minnesota Vikings game appears to be the most exciting game of Week 1 (passing up the Indianapolis Colts vs Los Angeles Chargers matchup). This game should be high-scoring and very competitive. Matt Ryan has a great shot at contending for an MVP this season (again, thanks to the Luck retirement). Julio Jones is arguably the best receiver in the league and should be in line for another big season. Calvin Ridley is poised for a breakout season as he workd opposite of Jones this year. A healthy Devonta Freeman puts this offense among one of the league’s best.
Both teams will have solid defenses by the end of the season, but I think the Vikings defense takes a bit of a step back from last season. The Falcons defense is going to surprise this season and their pass rush is something teams should certainly worry about. The Vikings offensive line is again going to be one of their biggest issues and Kirk Cousins is going to feel a lot of pressure again this season. The Falcons offense will overpower the Vikings defense in this one and I think they not only cover the spread but win this game. I think the Falcons will put up enough points that this game will go OVER as well. The Vikings offense will feel a lot of pressure in this one, but I expect them to put together a few solid drives as well. Of all Week 1 games, this one provides the best spread and total betting combo.
