Cincinnati Bengals @ Philadelphia Eagles (-5) O/U 46
Cincinnati heads to Philadelphia this week to take on the Eagles. Both teams are off to slow 0-2 starts. The Bengals 0-2 start was expected compared to the Eagles who have not been able to get things going thus far.
I think Philadelphia can knock off Cincinnati this week, so a play on the Eagles moneyline could give you another $100. However, there is more to this game, so let’s look at the matchup to see if there are more ways to win in Cinncinati vs. Philadelphia.
Both offenses have been struggling to move the football; the Eagles and Bengals rank in the bottom five in yards per play, with Cincinnati ranking last. The efficiency numbers do not show any hope of a turnaround either, with both ranking in the bottom six, and the Eagles being last.
Defensively, the Eagles do have the edge over the Bengals this week. Philadelphia is holding opponents to 5.0 yards per play, which is top 10 in the NFL, where Cincinnati is 6.2 yards per play, 25th in the league.
The efficiency numbers are closer, however. The Eagles still have an edge ranking 18th compared to the Bengals 22nd. Overall, both teams are not off to great starts, but the talent goes to Philadelphia.
Cincinnati does have an edge in rest with them playing last Thursday night. Their guys should be rested heading into Sunday’s matchup. If the Eagles have some key players go this week, then that will help.
Philadelphia has banged up thus far and cannot catch a break with injuries. Alshon Jeffery practiced this week, which would be huge for a depleted offense.
Bet: Eagles -5
The bet makes you very uncomfortable, which is why you have to take it. I’m not a trend bettor, but teams that have failed to cover the spread in Weeks 1 and 2 are 58 percent in Week 3. If a team fails to cover the spread and lose both games, they are 60 percent ATS.
That gives us the Eagles.
On top of that, Cincinnati cannot move the football, as they rank dead last in yards per play. The Bengals needed multiple backdoor opportunities to cover against Cleveland last week, even though the Browns were up two scores for most of the game.
As bad as Philadelphia has looked, they are still the better team here. The market is overreacting to what the Eagles have done in the first two weeks, but I believe head coach Doug Peterson will stop the bleeding in Week 3. They should beat the Bengals and be able to cover the spread.
