Israel Adesanya Profile
Known as the Last Stylebender, Israel Adesanya is currently ranked as UFC’s fourth-best pound-for-pound fighter behind only Jon Jones, Kamaru Usman, and Alexander Volkanovski. Adesanya is a former kickboxing star who made a meteoric, unprecedented rise to becoming an unbeaten UFC champion. Although he lost to Jan Blachowicz earlier this year, he still holds the middleweight championship as he made an aggressive push to move up to the light heavyweight class. In 2020, Israel Adesanya won both of his fights as he beat Yoel Romero in March by a 5-round decision and beat Paulo Costa by KO/TKO in September. Those two fights were title defenses following Adesanya earning the interim middleweight title at UFC 236 and becoming the undisputed champion by knocking out Robert Whittaker at UFC 243. Adesanya has a significant height and reach advantage in this match and is also a more accurate striker than Vettori.
Martin Vettori Profile
Called the Italian Dream, Martin Vettori has been waiting for this opportunity since losing to Adesanya by split decision at UFC on Fox 29 in 2018. While Derek Cleary and Chris Hayes gave Adesanya a 29-28 edge, Vettori earned a 29-28 advantage from Chris Lee. Vettori will certainly feel that he has the opportunity to pull off an upset here. Despite Adesanya’s height and reach advantage, Vettori has a slight edge in strikes landed per minute and is the much better takedown fighter – he averages just over two takedowns per 15 minutes. Vettori recently defeated Kevin Holland in April of this year by a five-round decision at UFC Fight Night. However, Holland is ranked just 14th among middleweight fighters, so Adesanya presents a significantly tougher challenge. Vettori is ranked fourth among middleweight fighters, so he arguably is earning this opportunity sooner than he should be, but he’ll look to capitalize and push for an upset title win.
