Drake vs Cincinnati (-13) – 7:00 PM
The Drake Bulldogs (1-0) hit the road to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats (0-1). Drake opened their season with an 86-55 win over Kennesaw State last Thursday. Cincinnati lost to #18 Ohio State last Wednesday 64-56 after leading by seven at halftime.
Drake shot 58% from the field and from three-point land in their season opener. The Bulldogs took 29 three-point attempts in the game. Against a team like Cincinnati that preaches tough defense, the Bulldogs will not shoot that well in this game. A team that relies so heavily on the three is the type of team that doesn’t play consistently. Drake only managed to get two free throw attempts throughout their entire game. Only managing to draw nine fouls against Kennesaw State, it is clear the Bulldogs have no interest in driving the lane. They appear content to take a ton of three-point attempts.
Cincinnati held Ohio State to just 19 points in the first half. If not for a terrible shooting performance, the Bearcats very well could be 1-0 and possibly ranked right now. Cincinnati shot just 33% from the field and 19% from three. The Bearcats managed to get 23 free-throw attempts but made just 14 of them (61%). They committed 27 fouls to just 18 for Ohio State, another reason they blew the game late.
Against a weaker team like Drake, Cincinnati should be able to clean up the small things and shoot better in this game. The Bearcats defense will be too much for the Bulldogs to handle. The only way Drake can cover in this game is to hit three-points at the rate they hit them against Kennesaw State. That won’t happen. Cincinnati’s defense will be the key in this game and their offense should be able to put together a better performance tonight. The Bearcats will also be the more aggressive team on both sides of the ball and should be able to cut down on their number of fouls. Coming off of a loss and looking for their first win, I like Cincinnati to have a great all-around game as they cover 13 points against Drake.
