Around the Betting Industry
The money bet on sports in Iowa has gradually increased since it became legal in mid-August — but the betting is expected to drop off as we get deeper into winter. Racing and Gaming Administrator Brian Ohorilko makes that prediction based on what he’s seen in the industry. Ohorilko says that football is the biggest driver for sports betting handle.
As football games become less frequent due to the NFL Playoffs and the college football bowl season, betting handle is expected to drop across the country. After the Super Bowl in early February, betting will take a universal slowdown until the start of next football season, aside from March Madness.

Miami(FL) (-7) vs Louisiana Tech (49) – 4:00 PM
The Miami Hurricanes (6-6) take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (9-3) in the Independence Bowl. The Hurricanes have dropped their last two games against Duke and FIU heading into this game. Louisiana Tech enters this game having won their last game after dropping their previous two.
Miami has been up and down all season as they have some solid wins against teams like Virginia, Pitt, Florida State and Louisville. However, they also have some bad losses against teams like Georgia Tech, FIU and Duke. The Miami offense is just 74th in points scored per game despite a decent passing attack that ranks 41st in the country. The Hurricanes have a very good defense that is 24th in points allowed. Miami is 22nd against the pass and 15th against the rush. They are also 13th in the country in yards allowed per play.
Louisiana Tech’s strength is in their offense. The Bulldogs are 28th in points scored per game thanks to their balanced offense which is 32nd in passing and 59th in rushing. The Bulldogs have a solid defense as well as they are 44th in points allowed. However, they have struggled against the pass as they rank 98th in passing yards allowed per game (248 YPG). Louisiana Tech has had an extremely easy schedule as just two of their wins have come against opponents above .500 (Southern Miss and Grambling State).
The Hurricanes are the far better team in the matchup as Tech’s record is just a product of their extremely easy schedule. Texas was the toughest team the Bulldogs faced all season and they lost 45-14. Miami hasn’t been consistent this season but they should be able to get a comfortable win in this game. I like the Hurricanes to put up a lot of points in this game and I think Tech can put up enough points to help this game go OVER 49 but not enough for them to cover. I’m going with the parlay in this game as I am taking both OVER 49 and Miami-7.
