DraftKings Sportsbook received approval to launch its online platform from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board at their October 30th meeting. DraftKings will now have their “soft-launch” on Monday, November 4th. They will become the sixth online sportsbook in the state and will operate through Penn National and The Meadows Casino which is located in Washington, Pennsylvania.
DraftKings Retail Already Open, Now Mobile
The DraftKings Sportsbook opened its retail sportsbook at The Meadows Casino back in early October. A $1.4 million renovation transformed one of the casinos bars into the new sportsbook. DraftKings wasn’t the original partner for Penn National Gaming. Originally, Penn National was in ties with William Hill. Once DraftKings was approved to operate in Pennsylvania, Penn National Gaming made the move to switch to the sports betting powerhouse. Now, both Penn National’s two Pennsylvania properties (The Meadows and Hollywood Casino) operate with odds powered by Kambi Technology.
Better Late Than Never
DraftKings is a little late to the Pennsylvania sports betting party. The main rival to DraftKings, FanDuel Sportsbook, has been operating in Pennsylvania online since July. They quickly became the top sportsbook in Pennsylvania in terms of both handle and revenue during their first full month in operation. FanDuel is also the leader in New Jersey where DraftKings is a distant second month-by-month.
Despite their late arrival, DraftKings is expected to also jump ahead of BetRivers as one of the state’s top sportsbooks. If New Jersey is any indication we can expect DraftKings to blow away every online sportsbook aside from FanDuel, who they will fall a distant second behind. Pennsylvania will be the fourth state that DraftKings will open an online sportsbook in (New Jersey, West Virginia, and Indiana).
What to Expect From DK in PA
DraftKings will be working with Penn National Gaming for the next decade. The two parties agreed to a 10-year partnership deal for the state of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board releases monthly reports on sports betting. As of September, about 80% of all bets placed in Pennsylvania come via online/mobile platforms. Of all of the states that DraftKings has sportsbook operations in, Pennsylvania has the largest population. The Keystone State should immediately become one of DraftKings’ most successful states for their sportsbook in terms of handle and potentially revenue.
As for the mobile sportsbook, we should expect a very identical product to what is offered in other states. The app and website will feature an integration of both the site’s Daily Fantasy and Sportsbook options. The DraftKings Sportsbook is an easy to navigate site that features plenty of betting options and some of the best bonuses and promotions in the industry. After a quick account registration that will confirm your identity, Pennsylvania residents will be able to place real money sports bets through DraftKings. A geo-locator will confirm that each bet is made within Pennsylvania state lines. You don’t need to be a Pennsylvania resident to play but you do need to be located in the state of Pennsylvania at the time your bet is placed.
DraftKings is expected to go through testing for a couple of days with limited operational hours. After testing, DraftKings will be able to go fully live in Pennsylvania, barring any setbacks. Pennsylvania residents can expect a full DraftKings product as soon as Wednesday, November 6th.
