Around the Betting Industry
The race to get legal sports betting on the ballot in California this November has taken another step forward this week. On Tuesday, a coalition of 18 Native American tribes was given state approval to begin circulating petitions for a statewide ballot initiative that would allow sports betting at tribal casinos and horse racing tracks, but not at rival card clubs or on the internet.
Previous legal battles between California tribes and the state’s card clubs are all but guaranteed to continue with sports betting. While the tribes’ proposal does not include card clubs as part of the establishments able to operate legal sports betting, card clubs are still trying to get into the legal sports betting market by supporting a separate ballot measure.

USC vs #12 Oregon (-9.5) – 11:00 PM
The USC Trojans (15-3) take on the #12 Oregon Ducks (15-4) tonight in Eugene. The Trojans are on a three-game winning streak and have won nine of their last 10 games. After a loss to Washington State (72-61), the Ducks rebounded with a win against Washington in their last game (64-61) as Oregon has won four of their last five games.
USC is 111th in the country in points per game. The Trojans are a good 3PT shooting team (79th), a slightly above average team from inside the arc (156th) and a bad shooting team from the line (291st). The defense hasn’t been as good in terms of total points allowed ranking (141st). However, they have held their opponents to some low shooting percentages, including 37th in FG%. A 15-3 record is impressive, but the Trojans S.O.S. ranks outside the Top 100.
Oregon has been bouncing around the rankings all season. Of their four losses, two have been against teams that are currently ranked (Gonzaga and Colorado) and two against weaker teams in UNC and Washington State. Their biggest wins have been against Memphis, Houston, Seton Hall, Michigan and Arizona. The Ducks are 61st in points per game this season thanks to ranking in the Top 25 in both FG% and 3PT%. However, their free-throw shooting has been bad as they are just 275th in the country in percentage. Defensively the Ducks hold opponents to 39.2% from the field (38th) and 31.1% from three (97th), good for 120th in the country in points allowed per game.
Oregon has a schedule that is in the Top 25 in terms of difficulty so far this season. They have had a ton of close games so far this season but this is a very good Oregon team that hasn’t quite hit their stride yet. USC was getting destroyed by Stanford before they pulled an insane comeback from 20 points down thanks to 36 attempts from the line compared to 14 for Stanford. USC isn’t a bad team but I don’t see them as the same caliber team as Oregon. The Ducks should get a solid win at home tonight as they cover this one. The formula agrees and has Oregon winning by a score of 76-64.
