Purdue vs Wisconsin (-4) – 7:00 PM
The Purdue Boilermakers (14-12) take on the Wisconsin Badgers (15-10) in a critical Big Ten matchup that each team needs for a resume builder. Purdue has lost its last two games after losing to Ohio State 68-52 on Saturday. Wisconsin has won their last two games after defeating Nebraska 81-64 on Saturday,
Purdue has had a tough time putting up points this season. The Boilermakers are just 259th in points per game. They have had a tough time scoring from the field (238th) and from the line (298th). Purdue has been an above-average team this season from deep (121st). The strength of this Purdue team is their defense. The Boilermakers have allowed the 22nd-fewest points per game in the country this season. They defend well from three (59th) and have done well defending from the field overall (106th).
Wisconsin has been fairly identical to Purdue this season. The Badgers have struggled to put up points as well as they are just 304th in points scored per game. They struggle shooting from the field (256th) but have been above average from deep (146th) and excellent from the line (36th). Wisconsin has allowed the 20th-fewest points per game this season. While they haven’t defended the three very well (229th), they have done well defending from the field overall (75th).
This should be a hard-fought Big Ten matchup throughout most of this game. These are two identical teams that both play tough defense and prefer slow-paced games. However, the difference in this one will be from the free-throw line and from three. Purdue will fall behind early and start to rely too heavily on the three and that will be their downfall, as it has been a number of times this season. Wisconsin makes their free-throws and in a game between two teams this equal, that is usually the difference. I like Wisconsin to have the lead late in this one and pad that lead with a lot of free-throws down the stretch. The formula has the Badgers taking this game 64-56.
