Green Bay Packers vs San Francisco 49ers
The Green Bay Packers (5-2) will take on the San Francisco 49ers (4-4) this Thursday, in a rematch of last year’s NFC Championship Game. The Packers are coming off of a loss last week to the Minnesota Vikings (28-22). The 49ers lost to the Seattle Seahawks 37-27 in their last game.
Green Bay has one of the best offenses in the NFL but their defense, particularly their run defense, has been a major liability. Overall, the Packers’ defense is a respectable 11th in total yards allowed, 12th in passing yards allowed, and 15th in rushing yards allowed. However, anyone who has watched the Packers play knows that their defense can’t stop a decent running team to save their lives.
The 49ers entered the season with what was expected to be one of the best defenses in the league this season. A slew of injuries has stopped the 49ers from being the defense they could have been this season. Despite these injuries to a number of highly-talented players, the 49ers defense is third in total yards allowed, fourth against the pass, 10th against the rush, and 10th in points allowed.
The Packers are going to be without a few players this week due to COVID issues. Backup running back Jamaal Williams, third-string back A.J. Dillon, and LB Kamal Martin will all be out in this one. Green Bay could also be without starting running back Aaron Jones due to injury. If that is the case, Tyler Ervin and Dexter Williams will be handling the ball-carrying duties.
San Francisco had some more bad news this past week. They lost QB Jimmy Garappolo and TE George Kittle for about two months due to leg injuries. Coming off of a short week, the 49ers will be forced to change a lot of their offense heading into a big matchup against the Packers.
Many expect the Packers to get run on no problem by the 49ers, much like in the NFC Championship Game. While they will likely give up more than their fair share of rush yards, Green Bay should also be in a better spot to defend against the run. Mike Pettine should have his defense ready to stop the run and forcing the Niners to have to pass in this game with a backup QB and without their top target in Kittle.
After failing to improve during the trade deadline, the Packers need a statement win here to help restore faith in Packer Country. Rodgers played well last week, despite the loss. Look for him to keep playing well and the Packers’ defense to do better against the run this week against a severely banged-up San Francisco team.
