FanDuel MLB Daily Fantasy Picks 7/17/19
Contents
MLB DFS is a high variance game, but one of the more fun fantasy sports to play. Cash games you want to find consistent high floor pitchers, and the same goes for hitters. Tournaments you want to find lower owned bats and pitchers that carry huge upside. This article will point you in the direction of both.
Pitchers
Mike Clevinger ($9,400) – The Indians are -290 favorites tonight, and the Tigers come in with a 3.3 implied total. By far these are some of the best Vegas numbers on the board, but Mike Clevinger gets a weak Tigers lineup. Against right-handed pitching this season, the Tigers projected lineup has a .304 wOBA and .145 ISO with a whopping 24.1% strikeout rate. Clevinger has battled some injuries this season, but his strikeout stuff is insane. Hitters have a 39% strikeout rate and 61% contact rate against him. There is some risk given the rocky outcomes of late. Clevinger has a 51% whiff rate on his slider that he throws a ton to right-handers, and a 30% whiff rate or higher on everything else.
Cash Hitters
Jose Abreu ($3,500) – Lefties have been no match for Jose Abreu this season, or in his career even. Abreu has a .406 wOBA and .209 ISO off left-handed pitching, and faces a struggling lefty tonight. Danny Duffy has allowed a .192 ISO and .333 wOBA to right-handers. He isn’t missing many bats, and allows a lot of fly balls. Right-handers have over a 40% hard-contact rate against Duffy this season. The White Sox are in a good rebound spot and might be lower owned after some recency bias catches up.
Trea Turner ($3,900) – Trea Turner is a nice pay up option at shortstop, as he has a .355 wOBA and .217 ISO off right-handed pitching this season. Aaron Brooks is on the hill for the Orioles, and has allowed a .208 ISO to right-handed hitters with a 45% flyball rate. Turner has some speed and power upside here, but a leadoff man for a team with over a six implied total is a good place to start for getting exposure. The Nationals bats are all in play again.
Justin Turner ($3,300) – Nick Pivetta has had a very up and down career, and this season is no different. Allowing a .402 wOBA and .248 ISO to right-handed hitters puts Justin Turner on the map. His power has been down against right-handers, but batted ball stats show he has been a bit unlucky. Turner has a .375 wOBA and 14% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. His hard-contact is over 40%, and he has over a 25% line drive rate. Turner is one of the cheaper options to get Dodgers exposure.
Tournament Hitters
Christian Walker ($3,000) – Christian Walker is a cheap power bat with a .263 ISO off right-handed pitching this season. The 30% strikeout rate isn’t appealing, but the home run potential is. Jesse Chavez has allowed a .361 wOBA and .250 ISO to right-handers this season, and has a sub 20% strikeout rate. The hard-contact and 1.46 HR/9 is a telling sign of Chavez’s struggles. Walker gets a nice bump in Texas, and should be overlooked.
Jason Kipnis (2,900) – Jason Kipnis is a cheap cleanup bat to consider, as he sports a pedestrian .336 wOBA and .163 ISO off right-handed pitching this season. Nothing major, but Kipnis has a cheap price and is in a good spot. Spencer Turnbull is allowing a .362 wOBA and .175 ISO to lefties this season, and his strikeout rate dips 10% against left-handers compared to right. Kipnis has over a .390 wOBA against the fastball range and sinkers, which both are thrown over a combined 70% of the time to lefties.
