FanDuel MLB Daily Fantasy Picks 7/22/19

MLB DFS is a high variance game, but one of the more fun fantasy sports to play. Cash games you want to find consistent high floor pitchers, and the same goes for hitters. Tournaments you want to find lower owned bats and pitchers that carry huge upside. This article will point you in the direction of both.

Pitchers

Robbie Ray ($9,600) – While Robbie Ray will come in with some ownership, his upside for the price is quite strong. He is a discount from Cole and Clevinger, and carries similar strikeout potential. He has a 30.6% strikeout rate on the year, and the Orioles projected lineup has a 23.7% strikeout rate against left-handed pitching. Ray’s walk rate is what always carries risk, sitting at 11.5%. He also has allowed a .208 ISO to right-handers. There is some risk, but for sub $10,000, Ray is a strong play. Arizona are -243 favorites, and the Orioles have an implied total of 3.5.

Cash Hitters

C.J. Cron ($3,400) – . C.J. Cron has a .318 ISO and .449 wOBA off left-handed pitching this season. The strikeout rate is below 15%, and hard-contact is over 35%. Cron has been lighting up southpaws, while C.C. Sabathia continues to slide closer to retirement. He has allowed a .364 wOBA and .245 ISO to right-handed hitters this season. He throws that cutter quite a bit to right-handers, who have a .355 wOBA and .243 ISO off of it. This game should feature plenty of offense on both sides. Cron is a bit cheaper than some of the other Twins bats.

Garrett Cooper ($2,800)Garrett Cooper has been mashing, and I like the idea of using a cheap bat like his at 1B and pairing him with another above. Ivan Nova has allowed a .391 wOBA and .202 ISO to right-handed hitters this season. He doesn’t miss bats, and hitters have a 80% contact rate against Nova. Cooper sports a .402 wOBA and .182 ISO off right-handed pitching this season. Below $3,000 with a massive park upgrade and good wind blowing out, Cooper is a strong play in all formats.

Eduardo Escobar ($3,800) – I don’t mind spending some cash on Eduardo Escobar, who has a .227 ISO off right-handers this season. He has also been hitting the ball of late. The Diamondbacks bats are in a good spot tonight, going up against Aaron Brooks. The right-hander has over a 5.00 xFIP and is allowing a .346 wOBA and .248 ISO to left-handed hitters this season. Arizona has over a five implied total, and Escobar shouldn’t come in with heavy ownership either. He is playable in all formats.

Tournament Hitters

Yoan Moncada ($3,700) – Yoan Moncada has a .400 wOBA and .243 ISO off right-handed pitching on the year. The strikeout rate is still heavy, but Moncada has a ton of upside in this spot. It is good hitting weather in Chicago, and Trevor Richards isn’t scaring anyone away. He has allowed a .361 wOBA to lefties, with a 42% flyball rate. His 5.69 xFIP is one of the highest in the league, and hitters have been teeing off on him. He has allowed 11 base runners in each of the last two starts.

Yasiel Puig (3,400)Chase Anderson is a reverse splits right-hander, allowing a .379 wOBA and .236 ISO to right-handed hitters. Yasiel Puig has always hit right-handers better in his career, and sports a .240 ISO off him this year. A good mix of speed and power puts him in line for tournaments tonight. Puig has opened up the second half with better contact numbers and a 113 wRC+.
