FanDuel MLB Daily Fantasy Picks 8/5/19

MLB DFS is a high variance game, but one of the more fun fantasy sports to play. Cash games you want to find consistent high floor pitchers, and the same goes for hitters. Tournaments you want to find lower owned bats and pitchers that carry huge upside. This article will point you in the direction of both.

Pitchers

Charlie Morton
($10,100)
Charlie Morton is the top option for me tonight, and will be a popular play. He takes on a fun Toronto group now that all the young guys are called up, but they still have a projected lineup with a 24.6% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. Morton has big strikeout upside with a 30% strikeout rate of his own. He is dominant against right-handed pitching, holding them to a .238 wOBA and .084 ISO on the season. The Rays are big home favorites, and Morton should be able to pick up a win of his own and a quality start. He projects to be one of the higher options on the slate and is a solid play in all formats.

Cash Hitters

Justin Turner
($3,000)
– The Dodgers take on Michael Wacha tonight, who has struggled for most of the year. He has allowed a .416 wOBA and .269 ISO to right-handers on the season. Lefties have also hit him for a .327 wOBA and .177 ISO. The Dodgers have an implied total over five to target within the last game of the night. Justin Turner is on the cheaper side, and has a .382 wOBA against right-handers. His ISO is .170 and he has a hard-contact over 40%. Wacha has three pitches getting clubbed for over a .400 wOBA on the yea  and .200 ISO.

Mookie Betts
($4,300)
Mookie Betts doesn’t have standout numbers against southpaws this season, but the Sox offense is certainly in a great spot after struggling this past week. He has a .341 wOBA and .163 ISO off southpaws on the year, but dating back to last season it goes to a .415 wOBA and .257 ISO. Mike Montgomery has been awful since being traded, but overall since last season has allowed a .334 wOBA to right-handers with a sub 15% strikeout rate. Betts matches up well with over a .400 wOBA off lefty curves, and he has a .355 wOBA of lefty sinkers.

Aristides Aquino
($2,000)
– Aristides Aquino is hitting cleanup tonight, and I will take a bare minimum cleanup bat any day of the week. For one he is a value play that allows you to grab a big bat and build around an expensive arm with more ease. The Reds have a 5.4 implied total, and face off against Taylor Cole in what will be a likely game where the Angels rotate a few guys in early. He is a young bat who had 28 HR in 78 Triple-A games this season and has hit 20+ in three of the last four years. He has some pop, and Cole isn’t a big strikeout arm either.

Tournament Hitters

Josh Donaldson
($3,500)
– This is an interesting tournament game as a whole. Both implied totals are over five, and Mike Soroka will face off against one of the top offenses. Jake Odorizzi has been pushing his luck at times this year, and is in a potential blowup spot. He is still allowing a ton of hard-contact and flyballs to both side of the plate. Josh Donaldson stands out here as a GPP option with a .264 ISO and .385 wOBA off right-handers this season. His hard-contact is at 49% and he has strong numbers off Odorizzi’s fastball range.

Jake Lamb
(2,600) – Both sides of this game are intriguing, and Jake Lamb is a cheap GPP option to look at. It is a small sample, but he has a 138 wRC+ and .300 ISO in the second half so far. His strikeout rate has dropped 7% and his walk rate is up 3%. Lamb has had strong hard-contact on the season, but it is now up to 45%. Vince Velasquez is on the hill, and not in left field tonight. He has allowed a .357 wOBA and .237 ISO to lefties on the season. Lamb’s numbers are climbing, but the price is staying the same.
