FanDuel MLB Daily Fantasy Picks 8/8/19

MLB DFS is full on in the dog days of summer. Cash games you want to find consistent high floor pitchers, and the same goes for hitters. Tournaments you want to find lower owned bats and pitchers that carry huge upside. This article will point you in the direction of both.

Pitchers

Jon Gray
($7,900)
Jon Gray getting out of Coors is a big help tonight, and he comes in fairly cheap against the Padres. This is a heavily right-handed group that strikes out a ton. Gray has a 24% strikeout rate this season, and 12% swinging strike rate. His strikeout rate goes up to 26% against right-handed pitching, which the Padres have five right-handed bats and the pitcher spot included in the lineup tonight. Their collective lineup has some pop, but also a 26% strikeout rate against righties. Gray has had a good track record against the Padres in terms of strikeouts, and the price tag also allows you to focus on grabbing some hitters. I will be rolling plenty of Gray out there even with some higher priced options on the board.

Cash Hitters

Kris Bryant
($3,900)
– Two lefties on the mound in a small ballpark presents a few options on both sides. Kris Bryant is one of them. He has a .473 wOBA and .373 ISO off southpaws this season. His strikeout rate is also sub 20%. Alex Wood is still working his way back into the mix after missing all of the first half. It hasn’t exactly been a kind start, and that groundball rate that was always so high is fairly low through the first few starts. Bryant is a big right-handed bat that I want to target tonight, and isn’t the only one from the Cubs.

J.D. Martinez
($4,300)
– The Red Sox have the highest implied total on the board, going up against the lefty Peters. He has allowed a .384 wOBA and .238 ISO to right-handers in a small sample size, and doesn’t have a ton of strikeout upside. You could toss in any name here, but J.D. Martinez has a .561 wOBA and .495 ISO off southpaws this season. Xander Bogaerts is also another right-handed bat with a .300 ISO and .408 wOBA off southpaws. He comes in expensive, but with a cheap arm like Gray, he should fit right into your lineups with ease.

Nick Castellanos
($3,400)
Nick Castellanos is the other Cubs bat that I have interest in. Coming over from Detroit, he has a .448 wOBA and .282 ISO off left-handed pitching. He is a major boost to this lineup, and will get the same enticing matchup as Bryant. Javier Baez is the other bat that has a .449 wOBA and .360 ISO off southpaws. It is a small ballpark, and I like targeting these names on a somewhat small slate tonight. The Cubs have a modest implied total of five runs tonight, and should draw some ownership, but they are worth it.

Tournament Hitters

Niko Goodrum
($3,200)
– Dating back to last season, Niko Goodrum has a .192 ISO off right-handed pitching. He has some pop, but a big strikeout rate also looms. For GPPs this is fine, and he gets Jorge Lopez, who has allowed a .375 wOBA and .211 ISO in that same time span. Detroit will come in low owned tonight, as they should because this offense is dreadful. Goodrum gives the second base spot some power, but comes with some risk. He should also fall below 15% ownership, so you have an advantage there.

Nick Senzel
(3,000)Nick Senzel is a GPP candidate to go yard off Cole Hamels. In a small major league sample size he has mashed lefties, with a .400 wOBA and .244 ISO. He also has a 9.8% strikeout rate. Hamels has been a solid arm, so a contrarian way to go is to attack him with Reds bats. Eugenio Suarez would be another one. Vegas is actually projecting the Reds offense to be about as good as Chicago’s tonight, yet ownership won’t reflect that. Senzel is a young talent that is also on the cheaper side and won’t break the bank.
