FanDuel Sportsbook NFL Week 9 Best Bet
New England Patriots vs New York Jets
The New England Patriots (2-5) will take on the New York Jets (0-8) on Monday Night Football in a battle of the two bottom teams in the AFC East. New England enters this game on a four-game losing streak after losing to Buffalo last week 24-21. The Jets are coming off of a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs (35-9).
After adding Cam Newton in the offseason to replace Tom Brady, the Patriots offense hasn’t been what they were hoping it would be. Many thought that Newton would bring a new look to the New England Patriots, which technically he did. A losing look. For the first time in nearly 20 years, Bill Belichick has lost four-straight games and the Patriots offense, particularly Newton, is the biggest reason why.
New England has the third-worst pass offense in the NFL. While they do have the league’s third-best rush offense, they are just 22nd in total yards per game. The Patriots are scoring the fourth-fewest points per game in the league this season. The New England defense has been doing fairly decent this season. They own the league’s eighth-best rush defense to go along with their weak rush defense that ranks 27th. Overall, New England is 12th in points allowed per game this season.
While the Patriots offense has been terrible, the Jets offense has been even worse. New York ranks last in the league in total yards, passing yards, rushing yards, third-down percentage, and points scored. Their best stat is their 22nd-ranked rushing attack.
On the defensive side, things don’t get too much better. The Jets own the league’s fourth-worst passing defense. They are also 26th in total yards allowed per game and 28th in points allowed per game.
Newton and the Patriots have been a trainwreck over the last month. While Newton keeps saying his play is unacceptable, he really hasn’t done anything to convince anyone that he is getting better. This very well could be the last chance Newton gets this season. As bad as New England and Newton have been, the Jets are historically bad. If Newton can’t put together a good game and get a convincing win, he may be moving over for Jarrett Stidham to come in and take over.
It may be an overreaction, but Newton might be playing for his career in this game. Trust in him to look like MVP Cam Newton and not 2020 Cam Newton in this game.
