The early line movement for the Super Bowl has been fascinating, and one of the areas that has very much caught my interest is in the total. After opening at 49.5 points, it’s been bet up to 50.5 as of Friday, February 3. That line movement is crucial, and I believe you should get this number before it moves further as 51 is a key number in betting NFL totals.
The Chiefs and Eagles both ranked top 12 in pace of play this season, and the Eagles’ play volume will increase by virtue of likely not playing with a significant lead for most of the game as they did for much of the season. When these teams met in Week 4 of the 2021 season, they combined for 72 points in an epic shootout, and while the rosters are somewhat different, the schemes are the same.
The Eagles’ defense hasn’t held up when facing higher-level competition this year. They played three top ten quarterbacks by EPA in the regular season. Jared Goff’s Lions put up 35 points, Dak Prescott’s Cowboys put up 40 points, and Trevor Lawrence’s Jaguars found their way to 21 points despite Lawrence turning the ball over five times in a driving rainstorm.
The Chiefs’ defense, meanwhile, is in a bind here. They’ve increased their rate of dime packages in an effort to slow down Lawrence and Joe Burrow in their two playoff games, and it’s largely worked. However, they can’t use that lighter personnel reliably here as the Eagles’ offensive line will bully them upfront and dominate in the run game. If they load the box, Jalen Hurts can get the ball to A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith in one-on-one situations.
I lean towards Mahomes leading the Chiefs to a win in this game, but regardless of who you think wins, the over looks like a very strong play. The Super Bowl is the most efficient betting market in the world and I’ll never advise going too big on a play in the game, but I love the over here as I think both offenses have a lot of success.
