Las Vegas Raiders vs New England Patriots (-5.5)
The Las Vegas Raiders (2-0) will take on the New England Patriots (1-1) this Sunday at 1 PM EST. The Raiders surprised most of the NFL last week with their win over the New Orleans Saints to push them to a 2-0 start in their new city. The Cam Newton-led Patriots fell to the Seattle Seahawks last week by a score of 35-30 after failing to score from the one-yard line as time expired.
Derek Carr has looked excellent in two weeks for the Raiders and a lot has to do with rising tight end Darren Waller. Waller is leading the team with 18 receptions and 148 yards (next highest is seven catches and 63 yards). Josh Jacobs is proving he belongs among the league’s best-running backs as he has 181 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. He is also the team’s second-leading receiver.
The Raiders defense has been vulnerable this season, allowing 30 points to the Carolina Panthers and 24 to the Saints despite them not having their leading receiver in Michael Thomas. Against a Patriots offense that will throw them some curveballs with Cam Newton’s legs, the Raiders defense will need to improve to keep this potentially high-scoring offense from piling up the points.
The Patriots defense isn’t the best unit Bill Belichick has ever had but it is still a very good unit. The Seahawks managed to put up 35 points against them last week due to their big plays. A number of deep shots from the Seahawks led to touchdowns for that Seattle offense, something that the Raiders haven’t done well yet this season. Carr has missed a number of open deep options in Week 2 alone. The Raiders offense likes to move slowly and control the clock, something they will have a hard time doing against this Patriots defense.
The New England offense flows through Newton. He has shown his ability to still get it down on the ground and through the air. He offers a difficult challenge to opposing defenses. The Raiders’ shaky defense will have a hard time slowing Newton down in this game.
With everyone high on the Raiders, they will be a favorite underdog pick this week. Instead, fade the public and take the better team, not the team that has had a better start. New England could easily be 2-0 right now if not for a bad play call at the end of the game last week. We saw how good Miami was on Thursday Night Football. New England held them to just 11 points in Week 1. There is no Tom Brady in New England but this is still a team to watch out for in the AFC.
Pick: Patriots-5.5
