FanDuel Sportsbook Live in West Virginia
The wait is finally over in West Virginia. Legal mobile sports betting is now back in the Mountaineer State. FanDuel Sportsbook was the first to bring legal online sports betting back to West Virginia after mobile was shut down in the state earlier this year. Although FanDuel was the first to bring back mobile to West Virginia, they certainly won’t be the last.

FanDuel Sportsbook Comes to West Virginia
FanDuel Sportsbook went live online in West Virginia on Monday, August 26th, 2019. Their sportsbook app is also available on iOS and Android. The online FanDuel Sportsbook is launched as part of a partnership with “The Greenbrier”, where FanDuel operates their physical sportsbook as well.
This is now the third state that FanDuel is present in online, joining New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The West Virginia app is similar to that of PA and NJ but also has its own unique traits. FanDuel will also be launching in Iowa and Indiana in the coming weeks, just in time for the start of the NFL season. Here are some of FanDuel Sportsbook’s retail locations set to open soon:
– August 29th, Diamond Jo Casino in Northwood, Iowa.
– September 4th, Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque, Iowa.
– September 5th, Blue Chip Casino Hotel & Spa in Michigan City, Indiana.
– September 9th, Belterra Casino Resort in Florence, Indiana.
Why Wasn’t There Any Mobile in West Virginia Before?
West Virginia actually had legal online sports betting in the state back in December 2018. Everything was fine until March of 2019 when the state’s only online sportsbook unexpectedly shut down. BetLucky ceased operations in early March of 2019 and West Virginia was without mobile sports betting. Issues between Delaware North and Miomni Gaming caused the online sportsbook to shut down and even caused issues at two of Delaware North’s land-based casinos (Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras).
Months went by with rumors swirling that an online sportsbook would soon be making its way back to West Virginia. Finally, over five months after the BetLucky shut down, FanDuel Sportsbook launched in West Virginia, bringing mobile betting back to the state.
Who Else Can We Expect in West Virginia?
FanDuel was the first to break ground in West-Virginia in the post-BetLucky era. However, don’t expect them to be the last. FanDuel may even be seeing some competition as soon as this month. DraftKings is expected to be the next online sportsbook to enter West Virginia. Stories have been going around of DraftKings inevitable entry into West Virginia, but FanDuel beat them to the punch. Expect the two rivals to be West Virginia’s first two competing online sportsbooks. Other online sportsbooks we can expect to see in West Virginia in the near future include William Hill and PointsBet. No timetable is currently known for either of the two online sportsbooks.
