While neighboring states have been progressing, Ohio remains in a legal sports betting stalemate. Pennsylvania, Indiana and West Virginia all have sports betting up and running while Michigan has recently legalized it and Kentucky is close to doing so as well. In the mean time, Ohio is in a fight with itself over which sports betting bill to move forward with.
Two bills to legalize sports betting in Ohio are currently in legislature and one key difference between the bills is causing progress to stall. While both bills allow for mobile sports betting, both bills call for a different regulatory body. Senate President Larry Obhof and Governor Mike DeWine have said they favor making it legal in Ohio’s 11 casinos and racinos, overseen by the Ohio Casino Control Commission. House Speaker Larry Householder supports putting the Ohio Lottery Commission in charge, which could allow for small businesses like bars and restaurants to have sports betting terminals.

#21 Illinois vs Purdue (-5.5) – 7:00 PM
The Illinois Fighting Illini (13-5) take on the Purdue Boilermakers (10-8) tonight. Illinois is currently on a four-game winning streak after taking down Northwestern 75-71. Purdue’s volatile season continued in their last game when they lost to Maryland 57-50.
Illinois managed to crack into the rankings last week and are now up to #21. The Fighting Illini are 78th in points per game and 62nd in FG%. They are a solid free-throw shooting team that ranks 111th but they struggle shooting from behind the arc (293rd in 3PT%). The Illinois defense is just as good as its offense as they also rank 78th in points allowed per game. While they rank above average in FG% allowed (112th), they are average defending from three (183rd).
Purdue isn’t as balanced of a team as Illinois. The Boilermakers are just 269th in points per game. They have struggled shooting the ball from everywhere on the court, ranking 285th in FG%, 212th from three and 291st from the line. As bad as their offense has been, their defense has more than made up for it. Purdue is 10th in the country in points allowed per game. They are one of the best teams in the country in defending the three (sixth in 3PT% allowed) and they are very good at defending inside the arc as well (46th in FG% allowed).
Illinois dismantled Purdue 63-37 earlier this month. It took nearly seven minutes for Purdue to get on the scoreboard and they shot just 25% from the field, 18% from three and 40% from the line. We should see a lot better performance from Purdue in this game as they look for revenge. All but two of Purdue’s losses this season have come against teams that were ranked at some point with the other two losses coming to a good Marquette team and a bad Nebraska team. I love betting unranked home favorites against ranked opponents and the formula agrees as it has Purdue winning this one 68-60.
