Bet On Fritz After Close Call?
While a lot of attention is on Fritz after a narrow escape in the first round versus Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, not enough focus is on the insane level that the Frenchman displayed. Mpetshi Perricard was one of the toughest players on tour to crack a year ago, winning two titles behind his menacing serve. He didn’t have more than one win to show for in his two tune-up tournaments, but he went three sets with top-50 mainstays in Brandon Nakashima and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Mpetshi Perricard served a solid 66% against Fritz, winning 82% of points behind his first serve. He looked better than normal from the baseline, yet Fritz managed to steal away 50% of the points behind the Frenchman’s second serve.
This highlights what was evident if you watched the match — Fritz was playing solid tennis. He returned the biggest serve on tour relatively well, and now he’ll gear up to face a Temu version of his first-round opponent, Gabriel Diallo.
Thanks to his win at Hertogenbosch, the young Canadian is now up to No. 40 in the world. Nevertheless, he’s still proven to be incredibly volatile. His 19-13 record at tour level includes some recent losses against Tallon Griekspoor, Jiri Lehecka, and Marcos Giron.
He simply isn’t ready for average-level competition on tour, and Fritz is every bit as good as his world No. 5 ranking, as long as he’s not playing on clay.
Taylor Fritz vs. Gabriel Diallo Picks: Best Bet
Fritz won two of the three grass-court tournaments he entered leading up to Wimbledon. He tallied more quality wins than Diallo, including a triumph over world No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Despite flirting with a first-round exit on Monday, there is nothing here to suggest Fritz’s level of play has dropped off.
He served at 68% against Mpetshi Perricard, producing a whopping 66 winners to just 15 unforced errors. This clean, consistent brand of tennis should leave Diallo in the dust.
The Kentucky product is incredibly one-dimensional, relying on his somewhat volatile yet pungent serve. From the back of the court, he lacks the quality of even Mpetshi Perricard and can’t touch the Frenchman’s serving numbers.
As of this publication, DraftKings Sportsbook is reporting that Fritz has commanded 93% of the moneyline handle compared to just 57% of the bets, meaning the “sharp money” is in lockstep with my betting angle.
For my money, Diallo’s inconsistent serve is the most attractive part of this handicap, lessening his chances of keeping this match close from a game-spread standpoint. This market refers to how many games the oddsmakers think the favorite will beat the underdog by.
After cashing in with Jack Pinnington Jones, I’ll happily lay 3.5 games (-115) in what I expect to be a beatdown of a player out of his league.
