Partnership Details
The partnership between the US sportsbook and the German football club will bring a lot of marketing chances for both sides. There will be social media promotions with opportunities to win Dortmund prizes. BetMGM will also receive rights for the player and team imagery. Dortmund fans will also have access to exclusive offers. Dortmund has done an excellent job reaching across the pond to accommodate their American fans and will continue to provide content on their English social media accounts. One of the more notable features of the partnership is that BetMGM will have live streams of Dortmund games through their app. Expanding the access of Bundesliga and Dortmund coverage is a major plus for both sides.
US History With Dortmund & Bundesliga
German’s top-flight football league has housed a lot of notable names over the years and is viewed as one of the best teams in Germany. They have also reached into the American player pool over recent years, especially of late with loads of young talent playing in the Bundesliga. Christian Pulisic, who now plays for Chelsea, spent his youth days playing for the Dortmund U-17 and U-19 teams before joining the first team. He scored 13 goals across 90 appearances and had 18 assists. Pulisic has since moved to Chelsea, where his former Dortmund coach, Thomas Tuchel, has rejoined him. Gio Reyna is currently playing for the Dortmund first team at 18 years old. He has scored three goals and recorded four assists in his 22 appearances so far this season.
There are more than ten American players currently playing top-flight football in Germany. Tyler Adams and Josh Sargent are the other notable names, playing for Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig. 19-year-old Matthew Hoppe has also scored five goals for Schalke 04 this season. Schalke 04 also had Weston McKennie over the past few seasons but was recently bought by Juventus. Veteran John Brooks is currently playing with Wolfsburg.
Is This Just The Beginning?
While this is the first partnership between a German football club and a US sportsbook, we could see more in the future. Dortmund is one of the few German clubs that draw big interest in the states, as Bayern Munich are the other. We have seen Fox Sports and ESPN+ bring extensive coverage of the league over the last few seasons, making it easy for fans in the US to access these games. Even with the domestic leagues catching a buzz, we know a large number of fans in the U.S. turn to watch international football with the World Cup and Euros. With so many younger Americans playing in Germany, that interest should continue to grow.
