Ja’Marr Chase Super Bowl 56 MVP Odds

The Cincinnati Bengals will take on the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, February 13, 2022, at SoFi Stadium.  The Bengals are a four-point underdog with their money line at +165.  For historical perspective, here are the top receiving performance by a Cincinnati receiver in each of their Super Bowl appearances.  The Bengals were a one-point underdog to the 49ers in Super Bowl XVI, losing 26-21.

In the tough loss Dan Ross had a game high 11 receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns while Cris Collinsworth had five catches for a game high 107 yards.  In their next Super Bowl appearance, Cincinnati once again was matched up against San Francisco and entered Super Bowl XXIII as a six-point underdog.  Cris Collinsworth led the Bengals with three catches for 40 yards as the offense struggled in the 20-16 heartbreaking loss to the 49ers.

Wide receivers have won the Super Bowl MVP seven times in 55 Super Bowls; tied for the second-most by position with running back.  Chase’s big play ability make him an ideal candidate to win the MVP if Cincinnati hoists the Vince Lombardi Trophy.  He has gone over 100 yards in two of the Bengals three playoff games this season; averaging 93 yards per contest.  Ja’Marr Chase is +1800 to win the Super Bowl MVP, a good value for a Cincinnati player not named Burrow.  Let’s look at the last four receivers’ statistics who have won Super Bowl MVP.

New England’s Deion Branch won the award in Super Bowl XXXIX with 11 receptions and 133 receiving yards in the Patriots win over the Eagles.  Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers won the award the following season in Super Bowl XL, as Pittsburgh beat Seattle.  Ward had five catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.  In Super Bowl XLIII another Pittsburgh receiver won the award.  Santonio Holmes had nine catches for 131 yards and the game winning touchdown as the Steelers beat the Cardinals.  Finally, Julian Edelman won the MVP in Super Bowl LIII as the Patriots beat the Rams.  In the low scoring game, Edelman had 10 receptions for 141 yards.

Ja’Marr Chase MVP Odds

Rookie wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been dominant this year; he was named Offensive Rookie of the Year at the NFL Honors ceremony this past Thursday.  In 17 regular season games Chase caught 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns: including setting the rookie record for receiving yards in a game with 266 (vs. Kansas City in week 17).  The LSU product averaged 18 yards per reception and 85.6 yards per game during the 2021 campaign.  Including the playoffs, the fifth pick overall in the 2021 draft now has scored 14 touchdowns, only Randy Moss with 19 in 1998 has more among rookies in the Super Bowl era, per NFL.com.

He’s one of three rookies in Bengals’ history with a receiving touchdown in a playoff game; the two others are Cris Collinsworth and Harold Green. With 279 yards receiving in the playoffs, Chase has surpassed Torry Holt (242 in 1999) for the most receiving yards in the postseason by a rookie since at least 1950, per Elias.  If the Bengals can get their stud receiver the ball they’ll be in fantastic shape, it’ll be interesting to see who covers him and what type of coverage (man to man or zone) Los Angeles plays.  Rams star cornerback Jalen Ramsey has been lobbying to cover Chase, we’ll see if defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and head coach Sean McVay decide that’s the proper way to cover the Bengals explosive receiver.
