Will Celtics’ Jayson Tatum Return vs. Knicks?
Trailing with under three minutes left in Game 4, Tatum collapsed on the court after diving for a loose ball in the Celtics’ 121-113 loss to the Knicks. The ESPN broadcast showed Tatum holding his lower leg immediately after the non-contact injury. He was later seen in a wheelchair heading to the locker room.
The defending NBA champs are down 3-1 in the Eastern Conference semis and will play without Tatum the rest of the way. On Tuesday, the Celtics announced that Tatum underwent successful surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. No timetable is available for his return.
The Game 5 betting odds reflect this update. Ahead of Games 1 and 2 at home against New York, Boston closed at -8.5 and -10.5 on the point spread. The line is currently , adjusting for Tatum’s injury.
To boot, the Celtics entered Game 4 with +200 odds of winning consecutive rings, but their best price is now . Standing on the brink of elimination impacts their title odds, but it’s Tatum’s injury that has caused their price to crater.
Before exiting the contest, Tatum was in the midst of a spectacular performance, tallying 42 points and providing Boston with as much as a 14-point cushion.
No team in the NBA’s history has managed to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the postseason, yet there have been 13 instances of successful comebacks after a 3-1 deficit. According to the Celtics’ series odds, the market is giving them a 19.1% implied probability of advancing to the Eastern Conference finals.
How Long Will Jayson Tatum Remain Out During NBA Playoffs?
While Tatum won’t return to NBA action for the foreseeable future, he’s been rather durable before this postseason tipped off. Until Game 2 of this year’s first round, Tatum hadn’t missed a playoff game in his professional career. Since he was drafted in 2017, no other player has come close to manufacturing the total minutes Tatum has played.
In fact, in the history of the league, Tatum sits behind only Larry Bird and Horace Grant regarding playoff minutes in the first eight seasons of their careers.
Moreover, in the coming days, Jayson Tatum is expected to become one of just 43 players to compile four first-team All-NBA selections in his career.
