Road To The Kentucky Derby

The Road to the Kentucky Derby is a series of races in which horses qualify to run in the 2020 Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby limits its entrants to 20 horses with as many as four reserve horses in case of late withdrawals or emergency fill-ins. There are three different paths to the Kentucky Derby. One is the main path that consists of 35 races in North America. The other one is through four races in Japan and the other being the European route which consists of seven races in Europe (England, Ireland and France). Horses that finish in the top four in these races earn points. Horses qualify for the Kentucky Derby based on these points.

Early Kentucky Derby Picks

Storm The Court

As of February 15th, Storm the Court is sitting tied-fourth in the Main Road to the Kentucky Derby standings with 22 points. Storm the Court won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile while sitting at 45-1 odds. Storm the Court’s nearly $1.2 million in career earnings is more than three times the next highest horse on the Main Road standings.

Tiz The Law

As of February 15th, Tiz the Law is tied-fourth with Storm the Court in the Main Road to the Kentucky Derby standings with 22 points. Tiz the Law’s 100 Beyer Speed Figure in the Holy Bull is the fastest for any 3-year-old colt in the United States this year. Tiz the Law was the winner of the 2019 Champagne Stakes.

Thousand Words

Thousand Words was the horse that earned bob Baffert his 3,000th career victory with its win in the Robert B. Lewis. Thousand Words has won three races in a row and according to Baffert, “the further the better with him”. This is a horse who excels in longers races and really hits its stride late in lengthy races. After his win that got Baffert his 3,000th career victory, Baffert also noted that the horse “wasn’t even tired”. Thousand Words very well could be the horse to get Baffert his sixth career Kentucky Derby win in May. Thousand Words is currently sixth in the Main Road standings with 20 points.

Another Baffert-trained horse, Nadal is already drawing comparisons to a former Triple Crown winner in Justify. Both horses were unraced as two-year-olds. Nadal won in his first race back in January by more than three lengths and that followed that race up with another victory. “We’re laying foundation. We’re basically running him into shape like I did with Justify,” said Baffert.

Chasing History

Ben A. Jones has the most Kentucky Derby wins by one single trainer with six. Bob Baffert is currently one Kentucky Derby win behind Jones with five. Baffert is certainly expected to have at least one horse in the Kentucky Derby again this year. Baffert could have as many as six different horses qualify for this year’s Kentucky Derby (Thousand Words, Azul Coast, Eight Rings, Authentic, High Velocity, Nadal). Come race time on May 2nd, keep an eye on any and all Baffert horses as he looks to chase down Ben A. Jones atop the Kentucky Derby trainer ranks.
