Knicks Next Head Coach Odds: Bet On Malone, Bryant, Or Longshot?

On Tuesday, the New York Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau after losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals, ending their deepest postseason run in 25 years. His tenure at the helm included four playoff appearances in his five seasons with the team, helping turn around one of the league’s most historic franchises. With that in mind, DraftKings Sportsbook has released betting odds for who will take over as the next Knicks coach. Let’s parse through this market and see if there’s anyone worth wagering on.

Michael Malone: +200

The longtime Denver Nuggets coach is the obvious pick to replace Thibodeau, and the betting market reflects that, pricing him as the favorite. By converting Malone’s odds to implied probability, he has a 33.3% chance of reentering the NBA coaching circuit next season.

Not only does Malone have a championship pedigree, guiding Nikola Jokić and Co. to the NBA mountaintop in June 2023, but he’s also a native New Yorker. His father, Brendan, was a former Knicks assistant.

With three games left in the regular season, the Nuggets surprisingly fired Malone. The decision reportedly revolved around a divide with general manager Ben Tenzer. Like Thibodeau, Malone was known for having his top players account for a plethora of minutes. If New York opts to look past this power struggle, his record speaks for itself: 471-327 in 10 seasons with the Nuggets, including 44 playoff victories.

Johnnie Bryant: +300

Bryant was the associate head coach on Thibodeau’s staff from 2020-24 and made the final round of the Phoenix Suns’ head coaching search. William Wesley, the Knicks’ executive vice president, was reportedly behind Bryant’s initial hire. Most recently, he served on the sidelines with Kenny Atkinson in Cleveland, helping lead the Cavaliers to 64 wins and the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. His odds to become the next Knicks coach were adjusted from +400 to +300 immediately after the Suns hired Jordan Ott.

Bryant’s current price tag converts to a 25% implied probability of hearing his name announced as the 32nd coach in franchise history.

Dan Hurley: +1200

Hurley was a popular candidate for the Lakers‘ opening last offseason. Nevertheless, the UConn men’s basketball coach and two-time national champion stated that he has no plans of tossing his name into the ring again. Remember that he inked a six-year, $50 million contract extension with the program, running through the 2029 season. Per the odds board below, the Huskies are one of the favorites to cut down the nets in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, reeling in combo guard Silas Demary Jr. (Georgia) to round out a formidable starting five.

While Hurley isn’t likely to make the leap to the professional ranks, his name hasn’t been scratched off yet.
