Not all the blame is on their secondary as the Raiders lack of pass rushers makes the back-ends job even harder as the offense has more time to let plays develop. With weaknesses at all three areas of their defense, the Raiders lack the production to even be a viable longshot.

One bright spot is that the Raiders do field a competitive offense. Even in the midst of all their injuries and off-field distractions, they finished 16th in Overall Off DVOA off the back of an elite ground game in 2022. Josh Jacobs ran wild last season in an effort to gain a massive contract extension heading into this season. Instead of an extension, Jacobs signed a one-year deal to remain with the team in 2023.

Even with the return of Josh Jacobs, the Raiders have failed to overcome a plethora of off field issues and poor offensive line play. Those issues have seemed to be remedied since the firing of Josh McDaniels, giving the Raiders new life as they dismantled the New York Giants to the tune of 30-6. A really impressive win given the circumstances, throwing in rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell on short notice with an interim head coach running the show.

After beating the Giants, the new regime Las Vegas Raiders have now won two in a row after thwarting the New York Jets. Not exactly two teams to hang their hat on, yet still impressive with the surrounding circumstances leading up to these games. An interim coach and rookie quarterback doesn’t exactly spell out success, as well as a below average defense at best. Still, the newfound motivation and sheer joy of playing underneath someone else has given the Raiders life.

The issue is that a harsh reality looms large over the Raiders as they can only skate by with their inefficiencies for so long. While Jimmy G certainly didn’t give their offense a boost of production, rookie Aidan O’Connell hasn’t exactly either. His conservative throwing style can only take them so far before opposing defenses start daring him to take shots down the field, as well as bringing in an uptick of pressure. The blitz was a missing factor against the Jets as they only sent pressure from their front four.

Until the Raiders can repeat these wins against stiffer competition then they should be pegged as nothing more than a severe longshot as their current Super Bowl odds imply. The offense has weapons to remain competitive, but the defense lacks production at all three levels of the defense. Other than Maxx Crosby, the Raiders fail to field another consistent force on the defensive line. That allows opposing offensive lines to easily shift coverage to negate Crosby and force someone else to beat them to no avail.
