The U.S. is home to some major sports betting states. Some of the top areas in terms of wagering include New York (which just celebrated its first full year of legal online betting), New Jersey, Illinois, and (of course) Nevada.
And while those states might see some big total betting handles, there are plenty of others that excel in terms of overall gambling, such as Michigan. The Michigan sports betting and Michigan online casino scenes are extremely popular, and with total data for 2022 being reported, it looks like the numbers will continue to climb.
Let’s dive into the Michigan online gambling numbers reported by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).
Michigan Online Gambling Numbers For 2022 Approach $2 Billion
2022 was a major year for online betting in the state of Michigan. According to a recently released Michigan Gaming Control Board report, the state saw gross receipts totaling $1.98 Billion from mobile sports betting and iGaming. This shows a 41% jump from the previous year, in which the Wolverine State collected $1.4 billion in gross receipts.
Michigan online casinos were the major draw in 2022, bringing in $1.58 billion of the total receipts, accounting for roughly 79% of the year’s numbers. Michigan online sports betting, on the other hand, generated $399.58 million. The total handle also saw a big jump from year to year, with $4.6 billion total wagered in 2022 compared to $3.7 billion in 2021. This represents a 24% increase between 2021 and 2022.
The Wolverine State also generated some major revenue in 2022, with commercial and tribal gaming operators contributing $302.98 million in overall payments and taxes. While Michigan sports betting accounted for $13.74 million of that total, iGaming operators were responsible for $289.24 million.

Michigan Betting Industry Closed 2022 With A Strong December
The state of Michigan saw some especially positive gambling numbers throughout the month of December 2022. The final month of the year brought in $168.23 million in adjusted receipts for online gambling, a 40% jump from 2021’s $120.6 million total. Online gross receipts also broke a record in the month of December, with $152.8 million exceeding the previous month’s $120.6 million.
Interestingly, the total handle went down a small amount from month to month, with December’s $478.7 million showing a 0.3% dip from November. Additionally, online gambling resulted in a total of $30.4 million in total taxes being paid to the state of Michigan for December, broken up between $1.9 million from online spots betting and $28.5 million from iGaming.
The growth in online sports betting numbers alone could have been tied to the success of Michigan sports teams around this time. The Michigan Wolverines faced off against the TCU Horned Frogs in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve in the first game of the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions went 3-1 throughout the month of December as the team fought hard for a spot in the postseason.
Additionally, the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons played throughout the month, likely attracting more attention from Michigan sports bettors.
