Michigan Lottery Player Wins $842.4 Million via New Year’s Day Powerball Jackpot Draw

One Michigan Lottery player is starting 2024 off with a bang, celebrating an $842.4 million jackpot win after matching all six numbers in the New Year’s Day Powerball drawing.

Purchased at the Food Castle of Grand Blanc, this Powerball jackpot marks the second-largest lottery win in Michigan, with the biggest coming as a $1.05 billion Mega Millions win in Jan. 2021.

Michigan Powerball Player Wins $842.4 Million Jackpot

The new year brought in new luck for one Michigan lottery player who won the coveted Powerball jackpot. Not only was Monday the first time in 35 drawings that a grand prize winner was crowned, but it was also the first New Year’s Day jackpot win since the Powerball draw began in 1992.

Ticket sales rocketed past the original $810 million jackpot estimate, settling at a final $842.4 million. The win goes down in history as the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot and the tenth-largest US lottery win.

The Michigan winner can either opt to receive the $842.4 million prize in 29 annual installments or as a lump sum payment of $425.2 million — both before taxes. He or she has one year from the drawing date to claim the prize.

Additionally, the store will receive $50,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Fellow New Year’s Day Powerball Players Win $22.7 Million In Total Prizes

Michigan’s new Powerball jackpot winner was far from the only lucky ticket purchaser following Monday’s drawing. Players from California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maryland all matched the first five Powerball numbers, winning $1 million each. And two players in Texas and Florida opted in for the additional Power Play feature, each winning $2 million.

In total, the New Year’s Day drawing resulted in over 1.8 million winning tickets worth a combined $22.7 million in prizes. Powerball’s Drew Svitko said:

“What an incredible beginning to the New Year for Powerball! In addition to our big jackpot winner, there are hundreds of good causes supported by U.S. lotteries that will receive further funding from this jackpot run. Thank you to our players for making this possible! Happy New Year!” winning Powerball number were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 and Powerball 1, with a Power Play multiplier of 3X.

This particular Powerball jackpot had been on the rise since resetting on Oct. 11, when a winning $1.76 billion ticket was purchased just north of Los Angeles. The California Lottery player has until Oct. 11 2024 to claim the winning jackpot. If the prize remains unclaimed, the money will then be distributed to California public schools.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize is 1 in 24.9.
