The Vikings are currently a +7 underdogs and +260 on the moneyline while the total is set at 48.5. With defense optional, this gives value towards Jalen Hurts, Dallas Goedert, and Alexander Mattison for a Minnesota Vikings vs. Philadelphia Eagles same game parlay.
Minnesota Vikings vs. Philadelphia Eagles Same Game Parlay Picks (9/14/23)
Regression hit the Minnesota Vikings hard in their week one contest against the Bucs as they made a minimal effort to shore up their defense from a skill wise perspective over the course of the offseason. Baker Mayfield, a middling quarterback at best, was able to pick apart the Vikings second level of the defense and they now need to find answers in a hurry against Jalen Hurts. That potentially spells disaster as the Eagles flex their versatility without even deploying their stud pass catching tight end. Expecting to get Goedert back into the fold, the Eagles skill position talent will routinely give the Vikings defense fits as they move down the field.
Leg 1: Dallas Goedert Over 42.5 Receiving Yards
It was a quiet day for Dallas Goedert in his week one contest against the New England Patriots as he finished the game with only one target and no receptions. An oddity for the stud tight end as he played over 92% of their offensive snaps.
He averaged nearly six targets per game in the 12 games he played last year. The volume is certainly there for him to clear this with the same cast of pass catchers this season.
With the Vikings coverage already stretching thin in an attempt to slow down Brown and Smith, this opens the middle for Goedert to exploit and fill in the gaps in coverage. As their third best option, expect Hurts to get Goedert back into the fold after a very quiet week one.
Leg 2: Jalen Hurts Anytime Touchdown
The Vikings do not have nearly the same level of defensive coaching or secondary talent that the Patriots possess, leaving the door wide open for Hurts to take advantage of when they get inside the 20.
Like Goedert, expect a bounce back towards the mean in terms of quality looks as Hurts gets his name called in more designed runs. It’s hard enough to already have to defend their pass attack and stable of running backs, getting lulled to sleep as soon as a linebacker doesn’t spy the rushing quarterback. This also gives us a chance for qb sneaks should they be right on the goal line. A near automatic touchdown for Hurts.
Leg 3: Alexander Mattison Over 14.5 Receiving Yards
With a collapsing pocket against an elite defensive line comes added volume in the checkdown department for running backs This plays right into our hands as Mattison will get added attempts to clear his receiving overs as the Eagles should have no issue with generating pressure into their backfield.
As for the Eagles second level of the defense, they took a step back from last year’s elite metrics and gave up plenty of ground to Rhamondre Stevenson when he hit the open field after the catch. Expecting more of the same out of Mattison, he should be able to clear this as he has already shown to be featured in their passing downs situation with four targets last week.
Leg 4: Eagles Team Total Over 27.5
It’s hard to back the idea of an NFL team covering over a touchdown, especially when their defense has appeared to take a step back early in the season. What was encouraging to see is that their offense had no issue moving the ball down the field, only sputtering in the red zone against an above average defense.
They now get the Minnesota Vikings, a defense that is expected to rank well below average again in Def DVOA.
With Goedert getting back into the fold and making them even more versatile, the Vikings secondary will get routinely torched as Hurts picks them apart. Factor in a much softer red zone defense and points should come in the form of touchdowns rather than field goals as we saw against New England.
