St. Louis Cardinals (+110) vs. Chicago Cubs
The home team is 9-0 this season in this classic rivalry match-up between the Cardinals and Cubs. I like the chances of that trend continuing as the Cubs visit the Cardinals today.
The Cubs in general have been the worst road team of any playoff contender, with a 20-31 record away from Wrigley Field.
Even after dropping two in a row to the Houston Astros, the Cardinals are still 12-5 since the All Star break. For whatever reason the Cardinals struggled mightily in May (8-18). Outside of that disastrous month St. Louis has the second best record in the NL after the Dodgers.
Veteran Cardinals starter, Adam Wainwright is 16-12 for his career against the Cubs and has a great record against star Cubs hitters Kyle Schwarber (.652 career OPS against Wainwright), Anthony Rizzo (.661), and Javier Baez (.292). After two disappointing outings for the three-time all star, I look for Wainwright to produce one of his best outings of the season and against this classic rival. Look for the Cardinals to pull away with the win.
Houston Astros (-130) @ Cleveland Indians
Houston Astros Ace, Justin Verlander is 8-2 on the road this season. He is also 3-1 in July with a 2.88 ERA with a 12.96 Strikeout rate per 9 innings. I look for him to get the better of the Cleveland Indians tonight.
The Indians have been one of the best team in baseball in July with a record of 17-5. They have improved their playoff chances drastically and now sit with a 4 game lead in the Wild Card Race.
However, they will be returning home for the first time in 10 days after a 7-game stretch on the road. I look for these conquering warriors to accept just a little too much praise as they return home – and for the stampeding Astros to be a little more game-ready by the first pitch.
Indians starter, Shane Bieber has had a great season. Indeed, the Indians are 5-0 in Bieber’s last 5 starts. But after pitching a complete game, 1 hit shutout, I like Bieber’s chances to be knocked back to reality by this solid Astros lineup. The Astros should have a fully healthy lineup for this first time in recent memory, with Jose Altuve, George Springer and now Carlos Correa finally back in action at the same time.
New York Yankees (-220) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
You wouldn’t like this Yankees team when they’re angry. Losers of 3 out of 4 in Boston, this Yankees lineup – the best offense in baseball – will be a scary sight to Taylor Clarke and the rest of the Diamondbacks pitching staff.
The Yankees will start J.A. Happ (8-5, 5.23 ERA) who has been steadily improving. Happ has been solid whenever not facing one of the best offenses in baseballs. If you excuse him getting shelled by the Twins on July 24th and the Astros on June 23rd, Happ has given up 2 or less runs in 6 of his last 7 starts against lesser competition.
The Yankees are 10-3 in Happ’s last 13 starts and 14-6 on the season.
With a day off to rest, I like this Yankees bullpen to hold down the fort late in the game. Set-up man, Zach Britton has allowed a run just three times in his last 32 starts.
