Colorado Rockies +120 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Hyu-Jin Ryu (11-2, 1.74 ERA) is having an awesome campaign, but I could see him having a set back in this one. Pitchers that pitch to contact always have a chance of being taken deep in the thin air of Coors Field. Just to use one example, Hall of Famer and Control-Legend, Greg Maddox had a 5.2 ERA when pitching at Coors Field, his second highest of any park he pitched at on more than four occasions.
Coors Field for Ryu too has historically been a tough place to play. For his career, Ryu is 1-4 at Coors Field with a 9.15 ERA, both his worst at any venue. Ryu’s worst performance of the season came on June 28th when he gave up 7 earned in only 4 innings to these Rockies in Colorado. The Dodgers are 2-5 in Ryu’s last 7 starts in Denver.
Even with the best record in baseball, the Dodgers have been a good-not-great team on the road. Their 30-25 Away record is only 8th in the Majors, 1/2 game ahead of the San Francisco Giants.
Rockies starter, German Marquez (10-5, 4.87 ERA) has been a solid arm at home for his career. Although, Marquez has been shelled several times at home this season, for his career, Marquez has a home ERA of 3.58 vs. a road ERA of 5.16. This divergence is even more telling given that all Marquez’s home games have been here at the most hitter-friendly park in baseball.
Look for Marquez to best Ryu and the Rockies to steal the upset.
Washington Nationals +110 vs. Atlanta Braves
The tape is getting out there on Atlanta Braves Ace, Mike Soroka (10-2, 2.44 ERA). As great as Soroka has been in 2019 – there are signs that teams are starting to better prepare for the first time All Star. In his first 14 starts, Soroka allowed more than 2 earned runs on just three occasions, allowed more than 7 hits just once and lasted to the 6th inning in all his games but one. In his last 4 starts, Soroka has allowed 4 earned runs twice, 8+ hits three times and didn’t make it out of the 4th inning twice.
Nationals starter, Anibal Sanchez has been trending in the other direction after a rough start. Over his last 3 months, Sanchez has a 2.84 ERA. The Nationals are 8-3 in his last 11 starts, and in Nationals Park opponents only hit .224 off Sanchez.
The Nationals have gotten to and beaten this Braves bullpen all series long – to the tune of 8 earned in 5 innings of work for the Atlanta relievers. I look for more of the same here as Anthony Rendon‘s continues to mount a late campaign for MVP.
Cleveland Indians +127 vs. Houston Astros
Making it 3 for 3 with home dogs today. The hottest team in baseball over the past month should be able to avoid a sweep, right?
Well we’ll see. I for one am backing Terry Francona’s men to embrace the roster shake up and earn a win.
The Tribe just traded away firebrand pitcher Trevor Bauer for a haul that included Yasiel Puig. While Puig – who was ejected last night in Cincinnati after the trade news had broken – will likely not be in the Indians lineup tonight, the fact that deal is done allows the team a sigh of relief and renewed focus on the task at hand.
Astros starter Jose Urquidy (1-0, 4.26 ERA) is not the pitcher Justin Verlander is, and I like the Indians bats to fire back after being shut out last night.
Indians starter, Zach Plesac (5-3, 3.10 ERA) has been solid. The Indians are 8-3 when the rookie starts, including winning 6 of their last 7. At home, he has been even better, with a 2.86 ERA.
The Indians bounce back with a heartening team win tonight.
