Seattle Mariners +168 @ Tampa Bay Rays – 1 Unit
The Tampa Bays Rays are riding high, coming off consecutive walk off victories over their past 2 games. All of that excitement and adrenaline may have worn off by the time they face off against the lowly Seattle Mariners, clearing the way for a let down performance.
Seattle may be coming into a late season rally reminiscent of their impressive 13-2 start to the 2019 season. The Mariners have won 3 of 4 on the road for the first time since April.
The second best road team in the MLB, the Rays have not been a great home team this season, winning only 53% of their games in Tropicana Field.
The Rays will start rookie Brendan McKay, who has struggled in his last handful starts after a dynamic beginning to his MLB career. After allowing only 3 runs in his first 16 innings with the Rays, McKay has allowed up 16 runs over his last 20 innings.
Conversely, the Mariners start their most consistent pitcher this season in Marco Gonzalez. Gonzalez has pitched through at least 5 innings in each of his last 12 starts, and has only given up more than 3 earned runs twice over that span.
The Rays are still being priced like one of the better teams in the AL, but have failed to live up to those expectations at home this season. The Mariners have a great shot at the upset.
Chicago White Sox +1.5 (-110) @ Minnesota Twins – 1 Unit
Like the Rays, the Minnesota Twins have been excellent on the road this season and only so-so at home. The Twins have the best road record in the MLB and only the 11th best home record.
The White Sox starter, Ivan Nova has been red hot recently. Over his part 5 starts, Nova (8-9, 4.51 ERA) is 4-0 with a 0.49 ERA. His last master piece came by way of a complete game shutout vs. the Houston Astros.
As hot as he has been recently, Nova has been solid against the Twins throughout his career. Nova has a 3-2 record and a 3.45 ERA over six career appearances vs. the Twins. The White Sox have won both of his starts against the Minnesota this season.
The Twins starter, Kyle Gibson has not been nearly has good. Gibson has given up 9 walks and 8 earned runs over his last 9 innings pitched.
Arizona Diamondbacks -0.5 (-142) vs. Colorado Rockies First 5 Innings – 1 Unit
It was a brisk, cloudless afternoon in Oakland California when the Texas Rangers came to Alameda Coliseum on September 22nd, 2015. In a back and forth affair, the Rangers held on to win their 81st game of the season 8-6.
Nobody knew it at the time, but that day will forever be etched in history as the last time today’s Rockies‘ starter, Chi Chi Gonzalez would earn a major league victory. Since that eventful evening, Chi Chi has been through a lot: twice demoted to the minors, lost two consecutive seasons due to Tommy John surgery, and all the while pitching his teams through 10 consecutive major league losses.
Back in the majors again this season, fortunes have not yet improved for Chi Chi. The Rockies have lost all 6 games that he’s started, with Gonzalez earning the Loss in all but two. Gonzalez (0-4, 6.57 ERA) has a 1.784 WHIP and gives up more than 2 home runs and 5 walks per 9 innings.
For humanities sake, I hope Chi Chi one day gets off the schneid. From a gambling perspective, I find it more than likely that his string of tough outing continues one more day in the desert.
Gonzalez has a 30% Fly Ball Rate for his career. He has never pitched in Chase Field and again hasn’t won a game since 2015.
Conversely, Diamondbacks starter, Zac Gallen has had an encouraging start to his major league career. Gallen had a 2.72 ERA when he was traded to the Diamondbacks from the Marlins and has only improved his standing in his first few outings for Arizona.
The Diamondbacks have won 5 out of 6 against the Rockies, including 3 in a row in Chase Field. I’ll take the home team here to have a lead by the end of the 5th.
