Over the last three days the Pittsburgh Pirates had gone 34 innings scoring only 1 run. Then the Pirates put up 4 in the 8th inning last night, marking another disastrous late inning loss for the Washington Nationals.
Their celebrations will be short lived. The Pirates can’t hit left handed pitching – they can’t really hit any pitching at the moment – and they’re facing the 4th best left-handed pitcher in the MLB this season (based on ERA).
The Nationals Patrick Corbin has been a revelation for Washington this year – and is the perfect guy to throw against this one dimensional lineup.
Pittsburgh sports a league worst .670 OPS against left-handers. Only the Marlins against righties have a word handedness split.
Another advantage for Washington: the Pirates Bullpen has pitched innumerable innings over the last 2 games. And by innumerable I mean 20.
The Pirates pen saved my bacon yesterday, pitching 8 shut out innings after starter Chris Archer left the game with shoulder pain. And while they’ve have been top 10 bullpen era over the past month, there is a tipping point for any group asked to do more than their fair share.
All 7 Pirate relievers on their active roster have pitched 1+ innings over the last 2 days. I like our chances of putting up a crooked number on 1 or more of these relievers in the second half of this game.
The Nationals Bullpen worries me, of course. But Corbin has pitched through 6 innings in 9 of his last 11 outings – so we only need to see our ways through 3 innings, likely. After last night’s fiasco, I think group rallies and does do their part.
Oakland A’s (-120) vs. New York Yankees First 5 Innings – 1 Unit
Just like with Aaron Nola the past six weeks, it’s hard for me to find a reason not to back Mike Fiers the way he’s going. The 34-year old veteran hasn’t lost a decision since May 1st.
The A’s are 5-0 in Fiers last 5 outings and 6-1 over his last 7 at home.
In Oakland this season, Fiers has a 2.89 ERA and has only given up 12 home runs in 14 games.

I have no idea what that means. But I do know San Francisco is often the coolest place in the US – including Alaska – on hot Summer days. Such is life by the bay. Today it will get down to a humid 66 degrees by the end of the game. That coolness leads to less home runs, which is the way the Yankees like to eat. This season ESPN ranks Oakland as the 25th most hitter friendly park, and they were 28th last year. Oakland gets a much smaller percentage of their runs from the long ball thank NY. Advantage A’s.
The Yankees starter, J.A. Happ has been average this season with a 10-7 record a 5.4 ERA, which really isn’t terrible anymore in the AL. But he definitely hasn’t been great like Fiers. Happ has given up 3+ runs in 4 of his last 5 starts. He has a 7.56 ERA over that span.
