NY Mets -200 vs. Miami Marlins – 2 Units
The Mets have now won 12 of 13. In that time they traded for Marcus Stroman, shut Robinson Cano down potentially for the season and have seen LF Jeff McMneil rise to poll position in the race for the MLB batting crown. Their playoff chances have gone from 4.8% on July 25th to 37.3% today.
Meanwhile, nothing much is going on with the Marlins outside of the introduction of rookie 2nd baseman Isan Diaz. While his father was being interviewed by Mets TV on Monday, Diaz had his first professional hit and first home run, off of defending Cy Young champ Jacob deGrom no less. Diaz is 0-10 in his other ten professional at-bats. The Marlins have shifted to play development mode – even more so – and while Diaz has shown glimpses (well, a glimpse) he is far from being a productive player.
Mets starter, Steven Matz (6-7, 4.6 ERA) has only pitched average over the season. However, his 2.85 career ERA against the Marlins is his best mark against any team that he has faced more than once.
Marlins are 1-10 in their last 11 games in Queens. With a starting pitching advantage, home-field and don’t see their hot streak ending today.
Cleveland Indians -198 vs. Texas Rangers – 2 Units
The Indians got any extra 24-hours to stew on their Monday shutout loss after yesterday’s game was postponed due to rain. I expect them to bounce back in a big way.
The Rangers start Ariel Jurado, who has been terribly recently. Jurado (6-6, 4.92 ERA) has given up 3 or more runs in 9 of his last 11 starts and 5+ runs in 4 of his last 8 starts. He looks around 50/50 to make it out of the 5th inning, and the Rangers bullpen is only 20th in the league.
Conversely, the Indians throw out rookie Zach Plesac who has been stellar all year. Plesac (6-3, 3.41 ERA) has been even better recently, going 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA since the All Star break. Cleveland’s bullpen remain tops in the league.
The Rangers are 6-12 against the Indians over their last 18 match ups for a 33% wining percentage. If that trend is representative we got a good bet. If Plesac remains stellar, we have a great bet.
Chicago Cubs -150 @ Oakland Athletics – 1.5 Units
Cubs took a rare home loss last night to these Athletics. They remain a team defined by their home/road splits. While they have been by far the worst contender on the road (21-33), they have been the 4th best team in the MLB at home (40-19). The only better home teams are the three World Series favorites, the Dodgers, Astros & Yankees.
Athletics start recent acquisition Homer Bailey, whom I think is vulnerable. Bailey (9-7, 5.2 ERA) has given up 16 runs in an Athletics uniform in only 18.2 innings pitched.
Cubs starter Jose Quintana (6-2, 4.46 ERA) has been solid in his 3rd year with the team. The Cubs have won each of his last 6 starts.
Despite the loss of Craig Kimbrel and Willson Contreras to injury, the Cubs still have enough talent to avoid losing two straight at home.
