Oakland Athletics -1.5 (-146) @ Chicago White Sox – 1 Unit

The Athletics have enjoyed two days off in the great city of Chicago since wrapping up their series with the Cubs on Wednesday. The usual negative effects of travel will be lessened here if not completely mitigated.
The A’s start their best pitcher in Mike Fiers. Fiers (10-3, 3.46 ERA) leads the team in Wins, Starts, ERA (among non-suspended players) and WHIP (among starters). The veteran is the perfect person to stop this recent losing trend on the road, where the A’s have lost five of seven. Fiers has allowed two or less runs in 10 of his last 11 games. He has allowed three or less runs in an amazing 19 straight starts. The model of consistency and durability, Fiers has lasted at least through 6 innings in 14 of his last 15 starts.
The White Sox return home after a 7-day road trip, including 3 games in the past 2 days in Detroit. The first game home after a road trip is historically tough to maintain focus – since players are often catching up with family and personal responsibilities.
Chicago hands the ball to journeyman Left-hander, Ross Detwiler (1-2, 5.72 ERA).
The A’s have the 4th highest OPS against Left-Handers in the MLB and players like Matt Chapman and Marcus Semien will be licking their chops.
Atlanta Braves -138 @ Miami Marlins – 1 Unit
Miami might have a small starting pitching advantage here – but the Braves need the game more and are a much better team. Don’t mind having to wait to get the lead with these Braves. Atlanta is top 5 in runs scored per game in the 6th, 7th and 8th inning.
The Braves have fallen off steeply the last couple weeks, highlighted by their humiliating blowout loss to these Marlins last night. But their season stats including run differential are still those of a top 5 team.
Marlins go with their best pitcher in Caleb Smith (7-5, 3.35 ERA), so the Braves will have to bring their A game. But Smith’s stellar pitching has not had a direct translation to wins for the fish this season. The Marlins are only 10-8 in Smith starts this season.
The Braves are 15-9 when handing the ball to Julio Teheran as they will today. Atlanta has won the last three of Teheran’s road starts and 5 of his last 6. Teheran only has a 6-7 record but that’s due mostly to bad luck. His 3.46 ERA is representative of a much better pitcher than his record would indicate.
The Marlins have been one of the worst teams overall this season and especially poor at home whey they are just 23-35. The Braves are on a 10-3 run against these Marlins. Braves bounce back today in a big way.
New York Mets +114 vs. Washington Nationals – 1 Unit
Did a rare day off mess up the momentum of the Mets? I’ll take my chances.
The other New York team have won 13 of their last 14. They have skyrocketed from an after thought smack dab into the heart of the NL Wild Card Race. The Mets now have a 42.5% to make the playoffs a number that will enjoy another decent bump if they can earn a win against the Nationals, the current Wild Card leaders.
The Mets hand the ball to Marcus Stroman for the second time in his NY career. Like CC Sabathia when he went to New York, or Justin Verlander when he went to Houston, I look for Stroman to kick his game into another gear now that he is in a competitive environment with something to play for. Stroman (6-11, 3.07 ERA) has allowed 3 or less runs in 8 straight starts, and 13 of his last 14.
Stephen Strasburg (14-5, 3.72 ERA) has had a great campaign himself, currently leading the NL in wins. That said, Strasburg is coming off his worst start of the season, allowing 9 runs in less than 5 innings in Arizona last week. He has a higher ERA than Stroman and doesn’t represent a significant enough advantage to warrant being a favorite on the road here.
Getting a team this hot and this good as a significant underdog is too good to pass up.
