NBA Cup Best Bets
Check out four bets below, including for the Lakers versus Spurs matchup on ESPN.
Austin Reaves Over 17.5 Points (-113 FanDuel) & Lakers Moneyline (-148 DraftKings)
Victor Wembanyama is an absolute defensive force who alters shots inside the paint like no other. He currently leads the league in both block rate on rim contests and rim defensive field goal percentage versus expected, according to Basketball Index.
Opponents do not want to enter Wemby’s territory, and San Antonio’s perimeter defense also needs plenty of work. As a result, the Spurs are giving up the 10th most jump shots per game, along with the 11th most wide-open triples.
Pick-and-roll ball handlers and off-the-dribble scorers can find tremendous success against San Antonio’s defense, which bodes well for Austin Reaves.
He leads Los Angeles in pick-and-roll ball handler possessions and narrowly ranks second behind LeBron James in pull-up jumpers per game. Look for Reaves to hunt for shots here and be a large source of points with Wembanyama marking Anthony Davis.
Finally, JJ Redick recently decreased D’Angelo Russell’s role due to lackluster energy and poor shot quality. Over the past three games, Reaves has subsequently seen a slight bump in touches.
He’s reached 18+ points in seven of 11 games this season, including his last four contests.
I’m also taking Los Angeles to cover. Davis is an awesome chess piece to throw at Wemby, and San Antonio will struggle to guard Reaves and James. The Lakers also look more balanced on both sides of the ball with Cam Reddish starting instead of Russell. Their 10.7 net rating across the past three games is an encouraging sign.
Josh Giddey First Bulls Basket (+340 FanDuel)
Chicago swapped Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey this offseason in an effort to get younger and also swing for the fences on the former sixth overall pick. Through 12 games, Giddey has averaged 13.2 points, 6.9 assists, and 6.3 rebounds per game.
His first basket usage stands out, as he’s taken Chicago’s first shot in seven of 12 games. Whether it’s opponents scheming for Giddey to shoot or simply the Bulls running opening plays through him, it’s irrelevant. What matters is that Giddey continues to be a strong first Bulls basket threat, and the odds are still not up to speed.
Clint Capela 20+ Points + Rebounds (-115 DraftKings)
Capela is only playing around 18 to 25 minutes per game these days, but it’s a great matchup.
Washington’s interior defense remains abysmal. Opponents are shooting 79.2% in the restricted area, and centers are scoring 30.9 points per game against them — both marks rank dead last. Additionally, the Wizards are surrendering the fourth most points per possession to rollers, which is Capela’s specialty.
The veteran should also feast on the glass considering the Wizards are giving up the highest offensive rebound rate. Put-backs project to be plentiful for Capela here.
Atlanta has squared off against Washington twice this season. Capela notched 20 and 17 PRs.
