Nevada Sports Betting

NevadaNevada was the first state in the country to legalize online betting. After the Department of Justice issued a legal opinion in 2011 stating that the Wire Act applied only to sports betting, states were free to pass their own legislation to permit online betting. Once this opinion was issued, the Nevada Legislature passed AB 114, which allowed online poker in the state.

Currently, online casinos in Nevada are limited to only poker, although there are separate online sportsbooks. AB 114 did not legalize any other form of online casinos. Online poker outlets must partner with a land-based casino that is licensed to operate in Nevada. They are subject to regulation by the Gaming Control Board.

Expanding into Online Casino Games Unlikely

Nevada law does not make it illegal for citizens to wager offshore. What is illegal is the act of operating an offshore casino that accepts wagers from Nevada residents. Given all of the legal physical gambling locations in the state, there is not much of an incentive for a Nevada resident to gamble offshore. In fact, a Nevada casino recently was subject to disciplinary action for linking to an offshore casino through its website. There is not currently any momentum to expand legalized online gaming beyond poker. Nevada has joined the multi-state compact that allows its residents to compete online against residents of other signatory states. Currently, these states include New Jersey and Delaware, with Pennsylvania soon to join.

There is a thought that expanded online gaming would negatively impact the business of the physical casinos. Not long after online poker became legal in Nevada, Caesars expressed an opinion that online gambling would hurt its business. That fear has proven unfounded in New Jersey, where revenues of the physical casinos actually went up after online gaming was legalized. That notion, however, has kept any groundswell for expanded online gaming in Nevada in check. However, there are at least conversations that have started about legalizing other types of online gambling although there is not yet any legislation. It is likely that at some point in the future, full online casinos will be coming to Nevada. Caesars’ website makes it clear that the online slots and table games are only available to play in New Jersey, and the only game that is permitted in Nevada is online poker.

WSOP in Nevada

The only option available for legal online casino gaming in Nevada is, one of the largest online poker outlets in the world. WSOP is operated by Caesars Entertainment. Players do not have to be Nevada residents to play on WSOP. Players only need to be physically located in the state at the time that they play.

WSOP operates on both desktop and mobile devices. However, the desktop supports many more different types of poker contests than does the mobile app. Players on the mobile version can only play one game at a time, and Texas Hold ‘em is the only type of game that is supported by the mobile app. In addition, the technology behind the mobile app has drawn heavy criticism for its lack of functionality. However, those who are playing on the desktop version can sit at multiple tables at the same time. The online version of the game moves much faster than the live version, enabling players to play more poker faster. The desktop version offers Texas Hold ‘em, Omaha and Seven Card Stud.

The online lobby features a great interface that allows players to easily locate games. Players are able to see who is seated at the table and their current bankroll in chips. Players can also view relevant statistics about the table.

WSOP offers a variety of games that can be entered for as little as a penny. Games can be played all the way up to the No Limit level. WSOP also offers multiple online tournaments online, including a $320 buy-in tournament with a $100,000 guarantee. Sunday is usually the day that has the most tournaments. In addition, is offering a fall festival with a total purse of $3,000,000.

Revenue, Usage and Future

The online poker market in Nevada has slowly and steadily expanded. It has taken some time for the online poker market to regenerate as players have bad memories of Black Friday that may have prevented them from re-engaging in the marketplace. Shortly after the introduction of legalized online poker in Nevada, online poker revenues were running at slightly under $1 million per month. Nevertheless, Ultimate Poker, one of the major online poker operators in the state, shuttered its operations shortly after commencing. The state no longer breaks out revenue numbers for online poker sites.

Now that there is the multi-state poker compact, it is estimated that there are about 250 players active playing online poker at one time. It is thought that the new multi-state poker compact may help stimulate the online poker market in all states that are signatories. Poker has contributed to an overall increase in Nevada gaming revenues as profits in the state are higher than ever. However, there are other types of gambling that are coming into competition with poker as casinos fight for the gaming dollar. Mobile sportsbooks are now offered in Nevada, giving bettors one more betting option. Nevada did attempt to make daily fantasy sports illegal to protect the gambling interests in the state. Nevada has required DFS operators to apply for licenses, and none of the major operators have applied. Currently, Nevada residents are restricted from playing DFS.

Nevada Online Sportsbooks

A number of Nevada casinos accept mobile sports wagers. Nevada got an early start in mobile sports betting, beginning to accept wagers through this medium in 2010. Since sports wagering has long been legal in Nevada, no additional legislation was necessary to permit mobile sports betting. The Casinos & Sportsbooks share the apps. As an example, MGM Resorts created an app and licenses it to Aria, Bellagio and more. Players must sign up for the accounts in person in Nevada although they are not required to be Nevada residents in order to open an account. Bettors must be physically located in Nevada when they place a wager. William Hill is one of the leading mobile sportsbook operators currently in Nevada.
