BettorEdge Launches in 40 States
BettorEdge, a new IP to the sports betting world, has successfully launched its product to 40 states. BettorEdge is a sports betting site that is more akin to trading stocks than it is to a traditional sportsbook. This is key not only to separate the app from other sports betting platforms, but it is what has allowed it to launch in so many states that do not currently allow for sports betting. BettorEdge has successfully launched in most states that would allow daily fantasy, including massive untapped betting goldmines like California.
What is BettorEdge?
The key to BettorEdge is the fact that there is no bookie setting lines or creating bets. It is also key that BettorEdge takes zero stakes in you winning or losing your bet as all that money goes to players. This means that BettorEdge does not qualify as a sportsbook or sports betting site in the traditional sense, which means that it can legally operate in several states that have not yet legalized sports gambling.
The way you play is by purchasing bets like you would purchase stocks on an app like Robinhood. However, instead of dividends, you are paid out if the bet you purchased wins.
One of the most interesting things about the site is setting your own lines. For example, if I do not wish to purchase a team to win at -150, I can offer up a line at a 57% chance of winning or -130. If someone is willing to take the opposite position of me for the opposing team to win at a 43% chance, then we have successfully created a bet. For those of you familiar with options, it is working in a somewhat similar way. You yourself are creating new positions in the market that need to be bought up by another player. Somebody has to win, and somebody has to lose.
Where to Play BettorEdge
The team out of Minnesota has created both a mobile application and a desktop site. However, from my experience, it seems that the app was just ported to the desktop, and the app runs a lot better from my mobile device. You also need to verify on your mobile device to even add funds, so it seems that the app is geared heavily towards mobile players.
You will need geolocation turned on as the app will not run in all states. There are still some states which have very strict regulations that do not even allow for daily fantasy, let alone a new kind of betting app like BettorEdge.
You can play completely for free with fake money to get used to the app. However, you can bet real money and make real cash playing BettorEdge.
BettorEdge seems like an interesting new idea. Many will be looking at this as one of the first attempts to navigate the laws in America to offer some form of sports betting to states that have yet to legalize it. If someone can create a program that is fun, popular and is allowed in states like California, then they could be looking at an extremely lucrative business.
