NHL Best Bets (5/2/23)

Find two NHL best bets and how we are betting on tonight’s slate of NHL games.

Maple Leafs 60-Min Moneyline (-125)

Toronto caught a break after Florida pulled off the upset in Boston for Game 7 and now will look to get off a strong start after being a bit more well-rested. This was a tight regular season series with three of the four games going to overtime but Toronto did take three of four in the regular season. Florida’s win over Boston was more of a letdown on the Bruins’s end rather than the Panthers really upping their game. While there is still no confirmation of the starting goalie tonight, Alex Lyon was first off the ice, per Chris Johnston. Both Lyon and Bobrovski struggled in the Bruins series and will face a potent Leafs offense in Round 2.

Both teams ranked inside the top eight in high-danger shots for and xGoals%. The over is certainly a play in this game as well, but my concern for the Panthers is struggling on the penalty kill again. They allowed 11 PP goals in the Boston series and were in the bottom-third of the league in regular season PK%. Toronto boasts a strong powerplay that ranked second behind Edmonton in the regular season. Florida averaged the second most penalties per game.

With Toronto on the rest advantage and home ice, I like them to take care of business right out of the gate.

Dallas Stars PL -1.5 (+145)

Plenty of bettors are going to be high on the Seattle Kraken after their stunning upset of the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche. However, I believe this is an excellent opportunity to get value on a Dallas Stars team that just pounded the Minnesota Wild in a series many expected to go to seven games. The Stars outscored Minnesota 21-14 in those games, and center Roope Hintz leads all postseason players with 12 points heading into this series to go with five goals. Goalie Jake Oettinger ended the first round on a major high note, with a 0.98 save percentage and 0.5 GAA in his last two games.

Seattle definitely has momentum coming into this game, but it’s important to note that Colorado was far from full strength throughout the series due to injury and suspension. Seattle’s depth is definitely a strength, with 15 different goalscorers throughout the first round. However, this is a strong Dallas team defensively (2.33 goals allowed per game is lowest in the NHL) that’s well rested facing a Kraken team that the betting market might be overvaluing due to recency bias. While the sixty minute moneyline is enticing to me, I’m going for the home run hit with a puck line wager on the Dallas Stars tonight.
