Pennsylvania Online Poker Legality

PennsylvaniaPennsylvania has legalized and launched online poker! While the sports betting and online casinos were first to go live, online poker is here, and you can play it throughout the Keystone State. Seven casinos were given poker licenses to then hand out or keep for themselves. Those poker licenses were explicitly for online use.

These casinos had to pay quite a bit more at $10 million versus the standard $4 million licenses to receive online poker availability. At this point in time, only one online poker platform is actually live in PokerStars. However, there are many more poker platforms projected to launch in the state. A lot lies in Pennsylvania’s ability to join the Multi-State Gaming Compact, which would broadly widen the online player base for these online poker platforms.

In Pennsylvania, you can play on PokerStars and BetMGM; however, we expect several other large poker platforms to join. The current timetable and licensing agreements are unknown, but Pennsylvania is still in its online poker infancy.

Pennsylvania & the Multi-State Gaming Compact

As of right now, Pennslyvania is not a part of the Multi-State Gaming Compact, which is a large hindrance to the growth of online poker in the state. What the compact essentially allows for is players to connect and play with players from other states. The two largest states involved in the compact are New Jersey and Nevada. This is why you see the biggest tournaments as well as international events being held exclusively in these states.

Pennsylvania regulators will need to decide if the compact is right for them, but if they do, you could see online poker explode in the Keystone State. Players from surrounding states would swarm to it to enjoy and participate in the large online events.

Other States With Legal Online Poker

New Jersey

New Jersey & Nevada

Nevada and New Jersey are the two biggest destinations for online poker since they have the largest tournaments. Players in these two states can connect with one another due to the Multi-State Gaming Compact that they have signed. Delaware is also a part of the compact but does not have as large of a market as the two big dogs. In both of these states, you can play on WSOP.com, which holds main events and even allows poker players the opportunity to win WSOP bracelets.

Michigan & West Virginia

Michigan and West Virginia are two of the newest states to allow online poker. However, you can only play with poker players inside of these states as there are no cross-state agreements. For example, if you are playing in Michigan, you will only be connected to fellow poker players in Michigan. Currently, Pennsylvania falls under this tier and description of online poker. While it is offered, it has not quite reached the level that is possible when it comes to users due to the fact that there is such rigid restrictions on who you can play with.

Pennsylvania Cash Game Overview

Pennsylvania does offer cash poker games! Currently, PokerStars offers an extremely wide range of games to play cash on. There are also buy-ins and big blinds for all ranges of players. You can start off small with blinds under 50 cents, or you can move all the way up to 10/20 games if you wish. Another great thing about online poker in Pennsylvania is the very small rake. You will effectively pay around or under 4%, which is as good as it gets when it comes to cash game poker.

Pennsylvania Tournament Overview

While you cannot play tournaments with players from other states, the current operators, PokerStars, still have tons of great tournaments available. You can enjoy Texas Hold’em 3-handed, 4-handed, and 8-handed when it comes to the tournaments offered. There are tournaments daily, with larger prized events happening on the weekend.
