Bet On McIlroy Or Scheffler?
The world’s top-ranked golfer and the most recent major champ enter the 2025 PGA Championship as co-favorites. The best odds of McIlroy winning this year’s second major are after he took down Justin Rose in his playoff victory at the Masters. It was McIlroy’s first major win in 11 years and made him only the sixth golfer in history to deliver the career Grand Slam.
However, Sherman has Scheffler power-rated higher than McIlroy. Motivationally, he believes Scheffler will continue to respond to his recent critics after finishing 31-under-par and claiming the CJ Cup Byron Nelson by eight shots on May 4. Golf bettors haven’t witnessed Scheffler at the peak of his game since winning last season’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Players Championship, Masters, and RBC Heritage — a run often compared to Tiger Woods’ dominant stretches.
Despite McIlroy’s success at Quail Hollow Club, Sherman doesn’t fancy his odds. In fact, he’s looking to fade McIlroy in a tournament matchup bet against Scheffler. For those unfamiliar with these props, bettors wager on just one golfer to beat another, either for a single round or the full tournament.
At Westgate, Scheffler’s odds have risen as high as -130 for this market after opening as a pick’em. Sherman noted that he’s aiming to continue pricing Scheffler on the higher end, hopefully attracting McIlroy bets in the process.
“After finishing off the career Grand Slam, bettors think he’ll (McIlroy) come in more relaxed,” Sherman said. “He’s won here (Quail Hollow) four times. You can look back at when they played the Open Championship at Royal Portrush (in 2019). He was the one everyone bet on because he knew that course better than anybody. I’m not saying he’s going to do that again, but just for his odds range, he’s way overvalued at this point.
“Scheffler’s approach shots, his iron shots. It’s difficult to find a situation that’s going to be too challenging for him versus everybody else.”
According to the odds table below, the best price for Scheffler to upend McIlroy is -105 at BetMGM Sportsbook.

PGA Championship Picks: Oddsmaker’s Perspective
While Sherman wouldn’t recommend betting on Scheffler to win the PGA Championship at odds lower than +600, he still sees some value on the board. In particular, he’s targeting Justin Thomas () and Daniel Berger ().
Thomas has won this major twice, including the last time it was played at Quail Hollow in 2017. He’s coming off a victory at the RBC Heritage in mid-April, indicating his form is trending upward despite his struggles in recent years.
With this field representing the strongest of any major, Sherman sees a bevy of capable golfers lower on the board, including Berger. After fully recovering from a back injury that forced him to the sidelines for over a year, Berger’s iron play has made significant strides lately.
He’s yet to finish outside the top 30 in a tournament since January, including five top-15s and a pair of top-three finishes over that span. Most recently, he tied for an 11th-place finish at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, gaining 5.1 strokes on approach and 1.7 more off the tee.
“He’s (Berger) just a quality golfer to find in that type of odds range,” Sherman said. “The way that he’s running right now, he can definitely threaten this weekend.”
