September WV iGaming Revenue Hits $12.7M As Sports Betting Handle Jumps 85%

The West Virginia online casino industry had a strong September, with $12.7 million in total revenue. This was a much-needed bounceback after what was a fairly slow summer for iGaming in the Mountain State.

The news comes after the announcement that new multiplayer slot machines would be introduced with BetMGM Casino West Virginia. The WV sports betting handle also saw a major boost in September, with an 85% increase from the previous month.

West Virginia Online Casinos Hit $12.7 Million In September Revenue

September was a big month for WV online casinos! According to Play West Virginia, the state’s online casino apps brought in a total of $12.7 million, up from August’s 11.6 million. This was also 18.7% higher than revenue from the previous year. September’s totals eclipsed the other summer month’s numbers, as the state saw $12 million in June and $11.4 million in July.

July of 2020 saw the official start of west Virginia online casino gaming following the passing of the West Virginia Lottery Interactive Wagering Act. Top online casino operators such as BetRivers Casino, BetMGM Casino, DratKings Casino, FanDuel Casino, and Caesars Palace Casino have all entered the West Virginia iGaming market.

Positive momentum from September 2023 should continue into the rest of the year. For reference, last year saw a similar revenue jump with a $1.1 million improvement from August to September. This upward trajectory continued, growing from September 2022’s $10.7 million to $12.1 million in December.

Multiplayer Slots Debut In West Virginia

In addition to revenue, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the West Virginia online casino industry. Multiplayer slots are now available in the state following a deal between BeyondPlay and Play’n Go.

This means that BetMGM Casino users in the state will now be able to check out different multiplayer slot machines. Some of the most popular slot games offered by Play’n Go include Highway Legends, Scroll of Seth, and Rascal Riches. Considering the massive popularity of online slot machines on iGaming apps, this could further improve online casino revenue in the state.

Sports Betting Handle Spikes 85% In September

The positive news continues for West Virginia betting, as September saw an 85.7% month-to-month handle increase from $23.9 million to $44.4 million. Revenue also jumped 72% from August’s $2.5 million to $4.3 million in September.

The handle totals are the most in the Mountain State since March 2023, when $45.5 million total was wagered. It’s also the first time the handle has eclipsed $40 million since April 2023’s $40.8 million.

As one might expect, the kickoff of the NFL season was the main catalyst for West Virginia’s improved betting numbers. Plus, college sports betting is fully legal in the state, meaning plenty of wagers came in on local teams such as the West Virginia Mountaineers throughout the first full month of college football.

As is the case with online casinos in the area, expect West Virginia sportsbooks to continue seeing strong numbers throughout the rest of the year. For reference, November of 2022 brought in the highest handle total of the entire year with $88.1 million. This currently stands out as the highest total in West Virginia betting history.
