Stafford & Goff Blockbuster Trade Shift 2022 Super Bowl Odds
A huge NFL trade went down Saturday night when the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions swapped franchise quarterbacks and a few draft picks. The Rams sent Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick to the Lions for Matthew Stafford. The Lions will receive an additional first-round pick in 2022 and 2023 and a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The move sent shockwaves through the NFL and could be the first of many big trades to come to this offseason. Last week, it was reported that the Lions and Matthew Stafford would be parting ways this offseason as the veteran quarterback requested a trade.
Stafford has been one of the more reliable quarterbacks in the NFL, despite the Detroit franchise night being able to put enough successful pieces around him to thrive. He helped snap the Lions’ 11-season playoff drought and made the playoffs three times in his career, going 0-3.
Goff has played five years in Los Angeles, with four being under Sean McVay. Most NFL experts and fans would agree that Goff’s success has come from what McVay can do as an offensive-minded coach. In his one season without McVay, Goff ranked last in PFF quarterback grading in 2016.
Although the sample size is small, there is a good chance Goff’s career takes a downward spiral in Detroit. New Lions head coach Dan Campbell is an offensive-minded guy who worked under Sean Payton, but the jury is still out if Goff will thrive in his system.
Stafford has shown his potential and what he can do as a quarterback in his career. With over 45,000 passing yards and 280 touchdowns, Stafford has a chance to extend the success of his career in L.A. with McVay as his play-caller. Stafford has had multiple top-10 seasons based on PFF.com’s grading system and three of the last five seasons where he was graded above an 80.
What will be interesting with this trade is to watch the trajectories of both quarterbacks moving forward. Stafford has been playing at a high level, but the franchise has underperformed in his tenure. Goff has been boosted by the team he plays as the league would give Goff’s success more credit than Goff himself.
Super Bowl LVI Odds Changing
Before the trade on Saturday, anyone could have bet the Rams to win Super Bowl LVI at +1800, depending on which sportsbook someone looked at. The odds shifted Saturday night, making Los Angeles +1000 to win the 2022 Super Bowl, only behind Tampa Bay (+900) and Kansas City (+600), who are in this year’s Super Bowl.
The Lions have fallen to having the worst odds in the NFL at +15000. Detroit before the trade was +80000. The impact of Stafford moving to Los Angeles has affected the Lions and Rams franchises in significant ways. The Rams are now a legit contender in the NFC and will be competing with the Packers and Buccs to play in the Super Bowl next season.
The Lions has been a poorly run organization for some time now, and with a new head coach and Goff as their quarterback, it could be another ugly season in Detroit.
