Thousands of Missouri Wagers Blocked During Kansas Sports Betting Launch

draftkings sportsbook mobile appSports betting in Kansas officially rolled out on September 1st, 2022. This was a big day for sports bettors in the area looking to place wagers on the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals, as well as college teams such as the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats.

Kansas joined a number of other areas that have launched legal sports betting in the year 2022, following New York, Louisiana, and Ontario. While Kansas sports wagering has seen a mostly successful release, there was one interesting issue that has recently come to light. Here’s how Missouri sports fans attempted to place thousands of bets as Kansas sports betting got its start.

16,000 Missouri Bets Blocked During Kansas Launch

With legal Kansas sports betting available starting on September 1st, residents began placing big bets on different sporting events. However, sports fans in neighboring Missouri also looked to get in on the action, albeit without much success.

According to GeoComply Solutions, 16,000 different bets from Missouri betting apps were stopped on the first day of betting availability. This is because Missouri sports betting is currently unavailable.

The majority of the wagers (60%) came from the portion of Kansas City located in Missouri. Although you simply need to be 21 years of age in order to place wagers in Missouri, you also need to be able to confirm your location in the state before placing any bets.

Because of sophisticated geolocation technology, wagers beyond the Kansas border (or anywhere else with legal sports betting) are prohibited. GeoComply Solutions also confirmed that the closer you are to a state’s border, the more closely your wagers are monitored for legitimacy while being placed.

When Will Missouri Legalize Sports Betting?

Clearly, there is a hunger for the launch of a Missouri spots betting market. As it stands right now, neither mobile sports betting or retail sports betting are available in the Show-Me state. It’s not as if there haven’t been attempts to roll out sports betting in the state, with a 2022 endeavour failing to gain enough traction. While plenty of different sports wagering bills have been presented to the Missouri General Assembly, none have gotten enough support to fully legalize sports wagering in the state.

Casino.org reports that Senator Caleb Rowden will prioritize sports wagering in the future, although there could be roadblocks along the way. It will be interesting to see how this recent news will affect the future of Missouri sports betting, as it may alert lawmakers to the massive potential of legal betting.

Plenty of Missouri’s Neighbors Have Launched Sports Betting

The especially frustrating fact for Missouri sports fans is the availability of sports wagering in neighboring states. The majority of nearby areas allow some form of sports betting, including Illinois, Tennessee, Iowa, and Arkansas, with the Nebraska sports betting market looking to open up sooner rather than later as well.

The fact that a cross-state trip allows for legal sports betting is a tough one for Missouri residents looking to sign up for DraftKings Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and FanDuel Sportsbook. While the numbers won’t be released for months, perhaps positive Kansas betting handle stats can help accelerate the launch of Missouri sports betting.
